Mariners outlast Orioles in 10 innings, 6‑5
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Randy Arozarena homered to lead off the 10th inning and Nick Davila recorded his first save of the season as the Seattle Mariners outlasted the Baltimore Orioles 6-5 on Tuesday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The victory was Seattle’s second straight against Baltimore following a 6-3 win Monday and improved the Mariners to 36-32. The Orioles fell to 31-37.
Arozarena, the designated hitter, finished 3 for 5 with three runs batted in, including the decisive two-run shot in the top of the 10th off losing pitcher Rico Garcia. Arozarena’s homer scored Julio Rodriguez, who had reached base on a walk earlier.
The Mariners took a 3-1 lead into the seventh inning thanks to a strong start from left-hander Logan Gilbert and Mitch Garver’s three-run homer in the fourth. Gilbert allowed one earned run on three hits over six innings, striking out five and walking two. He threw 94 pitches.
Garver’s blast came with two outs in the fourth after Randy Arozarena and Rob Refsnyder had singled. Garver drove a 1-0 fastball from Trevor Rogers over the left-field wall for his third home run of the season, scoring all three runners and giving Seattle a 3-1 lead.
The Mariners added an insurance run in the seventh when Arozarena singled home Victor Robles, who had singled and moved to second on a base hit by Rodriguez. That made it 4-1.
Baltimore chipped away. In the bottom of the seventh, the Orioles loaded the bases after an error by shortstop Cole Young and a single from Jackson Holliday. A double play erased the threat, but Samuel Basallo struck out with the tying run on third, leaving the score 4-1.
The Orioles then mounted a dramatic comeback in the ninth against Seattle’s bullpen. Leody Taveras led off with a strikeout, but Coby Mayo homered to left-center, his ninth of the season. Jeremiah Jackson singled and Tyler O’Neill doubled, putting runners at second and third. Basallo then reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Jackson and moving O’Neill to third. Taylor Ward walked to load the bases, and Gunnar Henderson grounded into a force out at home for the second out. Pete Alonso then grounded into another force out to end the inning, but Baltimore had tied the game at 4-4.
The Mariners answered in the 10th. With Rodriguez placed on second base by rule, Arozarena crushed a 1-2 pitch from Garcia into the right-field seats, scoring Rodriguez and giving Seattle a 6-4 lead.
In the bottom of the 10th, the Orioles fought back again. Blaze Alexander was hit by a pitch, and Leody Taveras singled to score the placed runner, Pete Alonso, trimming the lead to 6-5. Coby Mayo popped out, and then Jeremiah Jackson reached on a fielder’s choice that cut down Alexander at home. Tyler O’Neill struck out swinging to end the game.
Davila, who entered the game in the ninth and allowed one hit over one scoreless inning, got the save, his first of the season. José A. Ferrer (1-1) earned the win with one inning of relief, allowing one earned run on two hits.
Garcia (3-1) took the loss, surrendering one earned run on one hit over one inning.
Seattle had 11 hits, including two each from Arozarena, Victor Robles, and Josh Naylor. Baltimore had eight hits, with Mayo and Tyler O’Neill each collecting two.
The game was played before an announced crowd of 14,728 and lasted 3 hours, 12 minutes.
For Seattle, Logan Gilbert turned in his third consecutive quality start. He did not allow a run after the first inning, retiring 11 of the final 13 batters he faced. Gilbert struck out five and walked two.
Rogers started for Baltimore and went 5 2/3 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and three walks. He struck out three. Keegan Akin followed with 1 1/3 scoreless innings, and Tyler Wells tossed a scoreless eighth.
The Mariners opened the scoring in the first inning, but Baltimore answered in the bottom half. Taylor Ward singled and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Taveras, making it 1-0 Orioles.
Seattle tied the game in the second on a double by Sam Huff, but the runner was cut down at the plate. The score remained 1-0 Baltimore until the Mariners’ fourth-inning outburst.
The win was Seattle’s seventh in its past 10 games. The Mariners continue their road trip Wednesday night at Camden Yards, with the series finale scheduled for Thursday before they travel to Washington.
