Nationals’ three-run ninth inning tops Giants 4‑3 on Monday

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Clayton Beeter scattered three runs over eight innings and Gus Varland recorded the final three outs for his fifth save as the Washington Nationals rallied for three runs in the ninth inning to defeat the San Francisco Giants 4-3 on Monday night at Oracle Park.

The victory before a crowd of 35,432 lifted the Nationals to 34-33, while the Giants fell to 27-40.

Washington trailed 3-1 entering the ninth after the Giants had taken the lead with a pair of runs in the eighth. But the Nationals struck quickly against Giants reliever Keaton Winn, who entered with a 3-1 lead after Logan Webb had delivered eight dominant innings.

Luis García Jr. led off the ninth with a double to center field, his 11th two-bagger of the season. Curtis Mead was hit by a pitch, bringing CJ Abrams to the plate. Abrams lined a single to center that scored García and pinch-runner José Tena, tying the game 3-3. Daylen Lile followed with a single to center that brought Abrams home with the go-ahead run.

The Giants threatened in the bottom half. Rafael Devers drew a one-out walk off Varland, but Luis Arraez struck out. Willy Adames flew out to center fielder Jacob Young before Jung Hoo Lee singled to put runners at the corners with two outs. Varland then struck out Bryce Eldridge to end the game.

Beeter improved to 2-1, allowing three runs on 13 hits while striking out five and walking one. Varland earned his fifth save. Winn took the loss, falling to 2-2 after giving up three runs on three hits and a hit batter in two-thirds of an inning.

Webb had been terrific, limiting the Nationals to one run on five hits over eight innings with seven strikeouts. He left with a 3-1 lead thanks to a Giants offense that collected 13 hits but stranded 10 runners.

Jung Hoo Lee led the Giants offense, going 4 for 5 with a run scored. Casey Schmitt added two hits, Matt Chapman went 2 for 3 with a run batted in, and Luis Arraez had two hits. Bryce Eldridge doubled and scored twice.

The Nationals managed only eight hits but made them count. García finished 2 for 5 with a double and a run, and Abrams drove in two runs.

San Francisco scored first in the sixth. With two outs, Jung Hoo Lee singled and Eldridge followed with a single. Chapman then lined a single to left to score Lee, tying the game 1-1.

The Giants grabbed the lead in the eighth. Jung Hoo Lee reached on a disputed infield single after a replay review overturned an out call at first. Eldridge doubled to left-center to score Lee, and after Chapman was hit by a pitch, Eric Haase sacrificed the runners to second and third. Jonah Cox then laid down a squeeze bunt that scored Eldridge on a sacrifice to first base, making it 3-1.

Washington had taken the lead in the sixth when James Wood singled and García singled him home. After that, Webb retired the next 10 batters he faced before departing.

The Nationals struck out 10 times but avoided double plays after being doubled off in the third inning. The Giants executed two sacrifice bunts in the eighth to manufacture their runs.

The series continues Tuesday, with the Nationals also scheduled to face the Giants on Wednesday before returning home to host Seattle. San Francisco will host the Cubs for a three-game set starting Friday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a 5-4 final in favor of Washington. Interstat’s ELO system gave San Francisco a 55.9 percent probability to win. The Giants were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The combined total of seven runs went over the over-under line of eight.
