Orioles Roll Over Red Sox 8‑2 Behind Rogers, Early Onslaught

BOSTON (Interstat) — Trevor Rogers pitched six strong innings and the Baltimore Orioles erupted for six runs in the first inning Thursday afternoon, beating the Boston Red Sox 8-2 at Fenway Park to win the three-game series.

Baltimore evened its record on the road trip after a lopsided loss the previous afternoon, improving to 30-33 while Boston dropped to 26-35. The game lasted 2 hours, 42 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 33,180.

Rogers allowed one run on five hits over six innings, walking one and striking out five. The left-hander earned his third win against six losses. Brayan Bello took the loss for Boston, surrendering eight runs, all earned, on seven hits in five innings. He struck out four and walked four, falling to 2-6.

Baltimore sent 11 batters to the plate in the first inning, scoring six runs on five hits and two walks. The inning began with Taylor Ward doubling to right field. Gunnar Henderson was hit by a pitch, and Adley Rutschman singled to center, scoring Ward. After Pete Alonso grounded into a double play that moved Henderson to third, Samuel Basallo walked and Leody Taveras singled to right, driving in Henderson. Colton Cowser walked to load the bases, and Coby Mayo cleared them with a double to left, scoring Basallo, Taveras and Cowser. Jackson Holliday walked, and Ward followed with a single to center, plating Mayo. Henderson then reached on a fielding error by first baseman Willson Contreras, allowing Holliday to move to third and Ward to second. The rally ended when Rutschman was called out on strikes after a challenge overturned the original call.

Bello settled down after the disastrous first, retiring the Orioles in order in the second and third innings. Baltimore added two more runs in the fifth. Alonso led off with a single, and Basallo doubled to right, scoring Alonso. Taveras grounded out to move Basallo to third, and Cowser lifted a sacrifice fly to right, making it 8-0.

The Red Sox got on the board in the bottom of the sixth. Ceddanne Rafaela singled, and Wilyer Abreu singled to put runners on the corners. Contreras singled to left, scoring Rafaela. With runners on first and second, Isiah Kiner-Falefa grounded into a force out at third, ending the threat.

Boston managed only one more run. In the ninth, Contreras led off with a solo home run to left, his 12th of the season, cutting the deficit to 8-2. But Anthony Seigler struck out, Caleb Durbin lined out and the game ended with the Orioles in command.

Baltimore finished with 10 hits. Ward had three hits, including a double and two singles, and drove in two runs. Mayo doubled and drove in three. Basallo doubled and had two RBIs. Alonso had two singles and scored twice.

Boston mustered seven hits. Contreras went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Andruw Monasterio doubled, and Connor Wong singled. The bottom of the order struggled: Kiner-Falefa, Jarren Duran and Carlos Narváez combined to go 0-for-11.

The Orioles won the series after dropping the opener Tuesday but rebounding Wednesday. They travel to Toronto for a three-game set beginning Friday. The Red Sox head to New York for a three-game series against the Yankees.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Baltimore 7, Boston 4. Interstat’s ELO system had given Boston a 56 percent probability to win. Baltimore had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5.
