Yankees erupt for 13 runs in third inning, beat Athletics 13‑8
WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Interstat) — Will Warren pitched six shutout innings and the New York Yankees exploded for 13 runs in the third inning to defeat the Athletics 13-8 on Sunday evening at Sutter Health Park.
The victory improved the Yankees to 36-23 and gave them a split of the three-game series after dropping Saturday’s contest 6-4. The Athletics fell to 28-31.
Warren (7-1) allowed six hits and struck out five over six innings, lowering his ERA to a season-best mark. He retired the side in order in the fourth and fifth innings and worked out of a two-on, no-out jam in the third by inducing a lineout and a groundout. The right-hander has won three consecutive starts, including a 4-3 victory at Kansas City on May 25 and a 5-4 win over Toronto on May 19.
The Athletics struck first, scoring three unearned runs in the bottom of the first. Carlos Cortes led off with a double, and after Brent Rooker struck out and Nick Kurtz walked, Tyler Soderstrom grounded into a forceout that left runners at the corners. Jonah Heim reached on a fielding error by center fielder Trent Grisham, scoring Cortes and Soderstrom. Lawrence Butler followed with an RBI single to make the score 3-0.
The Yankees answered in the third with the highest-scoring inning in the majors this season. The first eight batters reached base against Athletics starter Jacob Lopez, who was lifted after Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI single cut the deficit to 3-1. Ben Rice doubled to drive in two runs, Aaron Judge singled to score Goldschmidt, and Cody Bellinger singled to load the bases. Jose Caballero walked to force in a run, and Grisham singled to score two more. Anthony Volpe singled to bring home Caballero, and Max Schuemann doubled to clear the bases. Austin Wells walked to reload the bases before Goldschmidt struck out for the first out.
Rice then tripled off reliever Mark Leiter Jr., scoring Schuemann and Wells. Judge struck out on a foul tip, but Bellinger singled to drive in Rice. Caballero singled and Grisham flied out to end the inning. In all, the Yankees sent 18 batters to the plate and collected 11 hits, with Rice driving in four runs, Grisham two and Volpe one.
The Athletics bullpen held the Yankees scoreless over the final six innings. Jack Perkins threw two and one-third hitless innings, Luis Medina struck out four in two perfect innings and Jose Suarez added a scoreless frame. But the Yankees’ lead proved insurmountable.
The Athletics began their comeback in the seventh. Rooker led off with a solo home run, his eighth of the season. Kurtz walked and Henry Bolte was hit by a pitch, then Heim crushed a three-run homer to right-center field, his second, to cut the deficit to 13-7. Zack Gelof singled but Jeff McNeil flied out to end the inning.
In the eighth, Darell Hernaiz doubled and scored on Nick Kurtz’s double to make the score 13-8. David Bednar entered in the ninth and struck out two, earning his first save of the season.
Heim finished 1-for-5 with three RBIs for the Athletics. Rooker went 2-for-5 with a home run and an RBI. Butler had two hits. For the Yankees, Rice went 2-for-5 with a double, a triple and four RBIs. Grisham drove in two runs on a single and a walk.
