White Sox Edge Twins in 3‑1 Afternoon Contest

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Munetaka Murakami homered, Drew Romo added a two-run shot and Anthony Kay pitched six strong innings as the Chicago White Sox beat the Minnesota Twins 3-1 on Monday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field, snapping the Twins’ four-game winning streak.

Romo’s home run in the second inning proved decisive, driving in Tristan Peters after a walk to give Chicago a lead it never relinquished. Rikuu Nishida singled in the fourth for his first big league hit in a successful debut. The White Sox have now beaten Minnesota seven straight times for the first time since an eight-game streak in 1995. The game was the opener of a four-game series and the first meeting of the American League Central rivals this season.

Minnesota struck first in the top of the first when Brooks Lee homered to left field, his sixth of the season, putting the Twins ahead 1-0. Chicago answered immediately in the bottom of the inning as Murakami launched his 18th home run to right, tying the score.

The game turned in the bottom of the second. Peters drew a leadoff walk, and Romo followed by crushing a 1-2 pitch to right field for his fifth homer, scoring both runners and giving the White Sox a 3-1 advantage. Romo, the catcher, also threw out a runner at the plate in the top of the second on a strong relay from Nishida, preserving the early lead.

Kay (4-1) was efficient, allowing one run on five hits over six innings, striking out five and walking one. He retired the side in order in the third and fifth and worked out of a two-on, one-out jam in the second after the Twins had tied the game. Minnesota threatened again in the fifth when Byron Buxton doubled and Brooks Lee was hit by a pitch, but Kay got Austin Martin to fly out to end the inning.

Seranthony Domínguez pitched the ninth for his 11th save, striking out two and allowing one hit. He closed the game by getting Victor Caratini to pop out to shortstop.

Zebby Matthews (1-2) took the loss, surrendering three runs on four hits over four innings. He walked one and struck out two.

Chase Meidroth had two hits for Chicago, going 2 for 4. Nishida singled in his first at-bat and finished 1 for 3. Sam Antonacci also singled. For Minnesota, Buxton doubled and Orlando Arcia, Ryan Kreidler and Alex Jackson each singled. The Twins outhit Chicago 7-6, but stranded eight runners and went 0 for 8 with runners in scoring position.

The game lasted 2 hours, 19 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 30,114.

The White Sox improved to 27-26, while Minnesota fell to 26-28. Chicago had dropped its previous two games at San Francisco, while Minnesota entered on a four-game win streak following a sweep at Boston. The Twins had won four of their last five overall.

The two teams continue the series Tuesday afternoon, with Minnesota right-hander Simeon Woods Richardson scheduled to face Chicago right-hander Grant Taylor. The White Sox then host Detroit for three games before traveling to Minnesota for a three-game set next week. The Twins go to Pittsburgh for three games after this series.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago White Sox 7, Minnesota Twins 6. Interstat’s ELO system had projected Minnesota with a 50.90 percent probability to win. Minnesota had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 4 went over the over/under line of 8.5.
