Rafael Devers, Schmitt homers lead Giants past White Sox

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Rafael Devers launched a grand slam in the fifth inning to cap a four-run outburst and the San Francisco Giants defeated the Chicago White Sox 8-5 on Sunday evening at Oracle Park, splitting the three-game series.

Devers’ blast, his seventh home run of the season, turned a 4-4 tie into an 8-4 Giants lead and proved decisive. The White Sox pulled within three runs in the seventh but could not complete the comeback.

Chicago opened the scoring in the first inning when Chase Meidroth led off the game with a home run to left-center field, his fourth of the year. The White Sox added another run in the fourth on a sacrifice fly by Luisangel Acuña that scored Edgar Quero, and two more in the fifth on a run-scoring groundout by Colson Montgomery and a single by Quero.

San Francisco answered quickly. In the bottom of the first, Willy Adames walked and scored on a double by Casey Schmitt. Rafael Devers followed with a double to drive in Schmitt, tying the game 2-2. The Giants took the lead in the third when Schmitt belted a two-run homer, his 11th, after Luis Arraez was hit by a pitch. That gave San Francisco a 4-2 advantage.

The White Sox tied it in the fifth, plating two runs on Montgomery’s groundout and Quero’s single. But the Giants broke the game open in the bottom of the frame. Adames doubled, Arraez was hit by a pitch for the second time, and Schmitt walked to load the bases. Devers then crushed a grand slam to left-center field, clearing the bases and putting San Francisco ahead 8-4.

Chicago got one back in the seventh when Miguel Vargas led off with a home run, his 12th, but could not mount any further threat. The White Sox managed only four hits in the game, including solo home runs from Meidroth and Vargas. Chicago’s other two hits were a double by Derek Hill and a single by Quero.

Giants starter Keaton Winn earned his first win of the season against one loss. He allowed four runs on three hits over five innings, striking out three and walking five. Caleb Kilian recorded the save, his third, by tossing a scoreless ninth inning.

White Sox starter Noah Schultz took the loss, falling to 2-4. He allowed six runs on six hits in four innings, striking out one and walking two. Relievers Brandon Eisert and Seranthony Domínguez each pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, while Grant Taylor allowed two earned runs in one-third of an inning.
