Gavin Sheets’ 9th-Inning HR Lifts Padres Past Brewers

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Gavin Sheets hit a three-run homer in the top of the ninth inning Wednesday night, lifting the San Diego Padres to a 3-1 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field.

The Padres snapped a 1-1 deadlock with their outburst off Brewers reliever Abner Uribe, who suffered his second loss of the season. Sheets finished 2 for 4 with a home run and three RBIs. Mason Miller earned his 13th save with a scoreless ninth inning, striking out two.

San Diego improved to 25-17, while Milwaukee fell to 23-17. The Brewers had won the series opener Tuesday 6-4.

The game featured a pitchers’ duel for the first eight innings. Milwaukee starter Jacob Misiorowski turned in a dominant performance, allowing four hits and no earned runs over seven innings while striking out 10. He did not factor in the decision. San Diego starter Michael King worked 5 2/3 innings, yielding six hits and one earned run with five strikeouts.

The Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning. Sal Frelick led off with a single to right field. Joey Ortiz followed with a bunt single to pitcher Michael King, moving Frelick to second. Miguel Andujar singled to center off Uribe, and Xander Bogaerts walked. Sheets then drove a 1-1 pitch from Uribe over the wall in right-center field for his sixth homer of the season, scoring Andujar and Bogaerts. The three runs were all San Diego would need.

The Padres threatened earlier against Misiorowski but could not break through. In the sixth, Andrew Vaughn singled and Rengifo singled, but Frelick flied out to end the inning. In the eighth, Jake Bauers doubled with one out but was left stranded.

San Diego’s bullpen held the Brewers scoreless over the final 3 1/3 innings. Jason Adam pitched a scoreless eighth inning and earned the win, improving to 2-0. Jeremiah Estrada worked 1 1/3 hitless innings. Miller allowed a one-out single to Rengifo in the ninth but then struck out Sal Frelick, induced a groundout from Gary Sánchez and struck out Chourio to end the game.

Rengifo had three hits for Milwaukee, going 3 for 4. Chourio singled once and walked. Vaughn had a single and Bauers doubled. Turang went 0 for 4 but drove in the Brewers’ only run with a fielder’s choice.

For San Diego, King settled down after the second inning, retiring seven straight batters at one point. He allowed only one run despite giving up six hits and two walks. The Padres defense turned a double play in the seventh when center fielder Jackson Merrill threw out Chourio trying to advance to second on a fly ball.
