Marlins ride early burst to 9‑5 win over Twins

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. (Interstat) — Max Meyer pitched six effective innings and the Miami Marlins built an early lead and never looked back, defeating the Minnesota Twins 9-5 on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at Target Field in front of 14,005 fans in a game that lasted 2 hours, 53 minutes.

Miami improved to 20-23 with the victory, while Minnesota fell to 19-24. Meyer, the winning pitcher, moved to 3-0 on the season. Twins starter Simeon Woods Richardson took the loss, his record dropping to 0-6.

The Marlins jumped on Woods Richardson immediately, scoring two runs in the first inning and two more in the second before breaking the game open with a four-run fourth. Minnesota answered with solo home runs from Byron Buxton in the first and third innings, but could not overcome the early deficit.

Miami collected 11 hits to Minnesota’s eight. The Marlins sent nine batters to the plate in the first inning, taking advantage of a fielding error by Twins second baseman Luke Keaschall that allowed Liam Hicks to reach and Xavier Edwards to move to third. Otto Lopez followed with an RBI single, and a double play later in the inning brought home Hicks to make it 2-0.

Buxton cut the lead in half with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the first, his 14th of the season, but Miami answered in the second. Leo Jiménez singled off Woods Richardson, and Owen Caissie crushed a two-run homer to left-center, his third of the year, extending the Marlins’ lead to 4-1.

Buxton struck again in the third inning, leading off with his second solo homer of the game, on the season, to pull the Twins within 4-2. But that was as close as Minnesota would get.

The decisive inning came in the fourth. Jiménez led off with a double to center. Caissie walked, and Joe Mack singled to center, scoring Jiménez and sending Caissie to third. Xavier Edwards then doubled to left, driving in Caissie and moving Mack to third. Hicks capped the rally with a two-run single to center, scoring Mack and Edwards, and the Marlins led 8-2.

Minnesota chipped away in the fifth, scoring two runs to make it 8-4. Austin Martin singled and later scored on a fielder’s choice, and a throwing error by Meyer on the same play allowed another run to cross. The Marlins added an insurance run in the sixth when Kyle Stowers walked and eventually scored on a wild pitch.

The Twins scored their final run in the eighth inning on a Victor Caratini double and a Matt Wallner groundout, but Miami’s bullpen held the line.

Meyer allowed four runs, three earned, on six hits over six innings, striking out five and walking one. Woods Richardson lasted just three innings plus four batters in the fourth, surrendering eight runs, seven earned, on seven hits and four walks while striking out two.

The most important sequence of the game came in the fourth inning, when the Marlins sent eight batters to the plate against Woods Richardson and reliever Caleb Thielbar. With the score 4-2, Miami’s four-run outburst effectively put the game out of reach. Jiménez, Edwards and Hicks each delivered extra-base hits in the inning, and the Marlins forced Woods Richardson from the game after he failed to record an out in the frame.

Key contributions also came from the top of the lineup. Edwards reached base three times, scored twice and drove in a run. Hicks drove in two runs and scored once. Caissie homered, walked and scored twice. Jiménez scored two runs and doubled.

For the Twins, Buxton’s two solo homers accounted for two of the team’s eight hits. He was the only Minnesota batter with multiple hits. Caratini had a double and a walk, and Martin singled twice. Josh Bell, Kody Clemens, Brooks Lee, Tristan Gray, Luke Keaschall and Matt Wallner were each held hitless.

Miami came into the game after a 3-0 shutout loss to the Twins on Tuesday, May 12, and had won four of its previous six games before that defeat. Minnesota had won three of its previous four games entering Wednesday.

The Marlins continue their road trip with a Thursday afternoon matchup against the Twins at Target Field, then travel to Tampa Bay for a weekend series against the Rays. Minnesota hosts Miami again Thursday before welcoming the Milwaukee Brewers for a weekend set.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Minnesota Twins 5, Miami Marlins 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Miami a 50.70 percent probability to win. The Marlins were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 11 went under the over/under line of 8.5.
