Bradish throws one-hitter, Orioles blank Yankees 7‑0
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Kyle Bradish pitched six one-hit innings, Adley Rutschman homered and the Baltimore Orioles beat the New York Yankees 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, handing the Yankees their first shutout loss of the season.
Bradish (2-5) struck out seven, walked two and allowed only a second-inning double by Jazz Chisholm Jr. as he bounced back from a rough outing against the Yankees five days earlier. The right-hander had lost his previous start, giving up five earned runs in four innings at Yankee Stadium on May 2.
The Yankees (27-17) lost starter Max Fried to a sore left elbow after three innings. Fried (4-3) allowed three runs on five hits, walked two and struck out two before being pulled. He is expected to be examined by the team physician Thursday.
Baltimore (20-24) scored once in the second inning, twice in the third, twice in the fifth and twice in the sixth to complete their first shutout of the campaign. The Orioles had been the last team in the majors to pitch a shutout this season.
The game was a stark contrast to the four-game series at Yankee Stadium earlier this month, when New York outscored Baltimore 39-10 while sweeping the Orioles. The Yankees took the opener of this three-game set Tuesday, but the Orioles rebounded to win the series.
Bradish was in control from the start. He retired the first three batters he faced in order, then worked around Chisholm’s double in the fifth by striking out Ryan McMahon and Anthony Volpe with runners on second and third. He finished his outing by setting down the final five Yankees he faced.
The key moment came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With the score 3-0, Blaze Alexander led off with a single to center off Yankees reliever Ryan Yarbrough. After Alexander stole second, Rutschman launched a 2-1 pitch over the right-center field wall for a two-run homer, his sixth of the season, giving Baltimore a 5-0 lead and effectively putting the game out of reach.
Rutschman finished 1 for 3 with three RBIs. Alexander went 3 for 4 with two RBIs and two runs scored. Coby Mayo had two hits, including a run-scoring double in the second inning that opened the scoring. Pete Alonso also had two hits and drove in a run.
Fried’s early departure forced the Yankees to use four relievers. Yarbrough worked three innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out four. But the damage had already been done.
The Yankees managed only one hit in the game – Chisholm’s double – and drew seven walks but could not score. They left eight runners on base and grounded into two double plays.
Baltimore’s bullpen, the worst in the majors by ERA entering the game, shut the door after Bradish exited. Dietrich Enns pitched a scoreless seventh, Yennier Cano worked a perfect eighth and Keegan Akin finished with a 1-2-3 ninth.
The Orioles took the lead in the second inning against Fried. With two outs, Mayo doubled to left field, driving in Leody Taveras, who had reached on a force out.
In the third, Alexander reached on a bunt single and advanced to second when Fried threw the ball away on the play. After a walk to Taylor Ward and a groundout that moved the runners to second and third, Rutschman lifted a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Alexander. Alonso then singled to right, scoring Ward, but was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Orioles added two more in the sixth against Yarbrough. Tyler O’Neill walked, and after Taveras struck out, Mayo singled and Weston Wilson singled to load the bases. Alexander then lined a two-run single to left, making it 7-0.
New York’s best chance to score came in the fifth, when Chisholm doubled and Spencer Jones walked with one out. But Bradish struck out McMahon and Volpe to end the threat.
The Yankees had swept four straight from the Orioles at home from May 1-4, outscoring them 39-10. But Baltimore took two of three in this series, including the shutout Wednesday.
New York next plays a three-game road series against the New York Mets beginning Friday. Baltimore travels to face the Washington Nationals for a three-game weekend series.
The Orioles improved to 20-24, while the Yankees dropped to 27-17.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Yankees 5, Baltimore Orioles 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Yankees a 61.30 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of seven runs went over the over-under line of 8.5.
