Colorado Rockies at Pittsburgh Pirates
PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — The Pittsburgh Pirates look to build on a strong start to their homestand when they host the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night at PNC Park, where the forecast calls for 68-degree temperatures and cloudy skies.
First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. EDT.
The Pirates (22-19) enter with momentum after shutting out Colorado 3-0 on Tuesday, extending their recent success against the last-place Rockies. Pittsburgh has won four of its last six overall.
Right-hander Mitch Keller (4-1, 3.86 ERA) takes the mound for the home side. Keller has been the Pirates’ most consistent starter, allowing two earned runs or fewer in five of his seven outings. He faces a Rockies lineup that ranks near the bottom of the National League in runs scored.
Colorado (16-25) counters with veteran left-hander Jose Quintana (1-2, 4.70 ERA). Quintana has struggled to find a rhythm, allowing 12 earned runs over 18 innings in his last three starts. The Rockies have lost four straight overall, including a three-game sweep at Philadelphia over the weekend.
Players to watch
For the Pirates, right-hander Bubba Chandler has been a bright spot in relief. Over his last two appearances — both losses — the 23-year-old has allowed four earned runs across 10 innings while striking out seven. He worked 5 innings Sunday at San Francisco, giving up two runs on five hits.
For the Rockies, righty Zach Agnos has been effective in a long-relief role. In his last outing Sunday at Philadelphia, he tossed two scoreless innings, allowing one hit. Over his past six appearances, Agnos has a 2.45 ERA across 15 1/3 innings with 10 strikeouts.
Series and schedule notes
Wednesday’s game is the second of a three-game set. The series concludes Thursday afternoon before both teams head into weekend series. Pittsburgh welcomes Philadelphia for three games beginning Friday, while Colorado returns home to host Arizona.
The Pirates’ offense was powered Tuesday by Spencer Horwitz, who drove in three runs. Pittsburgh has scored six or more runs in four of its last seven games.
Colorado has struggled to produce away from Coors Field, posting a 6-14 road record. The Rockies have been shut out twice in their last four games.
According to Interstat’s game simulator, the Pirates are projected to win 5-2.
