Philadelphia Phillies at Boston Red Sox
BOSTON (Interstat) — The Philadelphia Phillies visit the Boston Red Sox on Tuesday, May 12, at 7:10 p.m. at Fenway Park in a matchup of last-place teams in their respective divisions, with first pitch expected under cloudy skies and 59-degree temperatures.
The Phillies (19-22) will send right-hander Zack Wheeler (1-0) to the mound. Wheeler is making his second start of the season as he builds back from an extended absence. The Red Sox (17-23) have not announced a starting pitcher, but left-hander Payton Tolle could be in line for a spot start or long relief.
Philadelphia enters the game after a 6-0 shutout of the Colorado Rockies on Sunday. Left-hander Cristopher Sánchez was dominant, allowing six hits over seven innings with seven strikeouts, improving his season record to 3-2 despite pitching mainly in relief. Sánchez has allowed one earned run over his last two starts, spanning 15 innings. Catcher Kyle Schwarber went 3-for-4 with two home runs and two RBIs in that win.
Boston dropped its series opener against Tampa Bay on Sunday, losing 4-1. Tolle made the start, allowing three earned runs over five innings with four strikeouts. Catcher Mickey Gasper was 3-for-4 with an RBI in the loss. The Red Sox have lost seven of their last 10 games.
Tuesday’s game is the first of a three-game series. The Phillies will face the Red Sox again Wednesday and Thursday before traveling to Pittsburgh for a weekend series. The Red Sox will host the Phillies for two more games before heading to Atlanta.
Wheeler, who has not pitched since April 25 because of a groin injury, will be making his season debut at Fenway Park. He went 4-0 with a 2.37 ERA in five starts against the Red Sox from 2021-24.
For the Red Sox, Tolle (1-3) is coming off a start May 4 in which he threw seven scoreless innings of one-hit ball against Detroit, striking out eight. But he has allowed three earned runs in each of his other three starts.
Interstat’s game simulator projects a 6-5 Phillies victory.
