Guardians edge Angels 3‑2 on Martinez homer
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Angel Martínez homered and Slade Cecconi pitched four dominant innings as the Cleveland Guardians kept up their home mastery of the Los Angeles Angels with a 3-2 victory Tuesday night at Progressive Field.
Martinez connected for his sixth home run of the season in the third inning, and Bryan Rocchio delivered a sacrifice fly in the seventh that proved to be the game-winner. The Guardians improved to 29-4 against the Angels at Progressive Field since 2015 and have won the first two games of this three-game series despite being outhit in both contests.
Cleveland managed just four hits total, but made them count against Angels starter Walbert Ureña and a trio of relievers. The Guardians also received a strong start from Cecconi, who allowed five hits over four scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. Cecconi, who had won his previous two outings, worked out of trouble in the first, third and fourth innings before exiting with the game tied.
The Angels took an early lead when Vaughn Grissom homered in the eighth inning, his second of the season, but Cleveland’s bullpen closed the door. Hunter Gaddis earned the win with 1 1/3 innings of one-hit relief, and Cade Smith recorded his 12th save with 1 1/3 perfect innings, striking out two.
Ureña took the loss, falling to 1-4 on the season. He worked five innings, allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out four.
The scoring began in the third when Martínez, a right fielder, launched a solo shot to right field to tie the game. The Angels had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Mike Trout doubled and scored on a groundout, but Martínez’s blast erased that advantage.
Cleveland made it 2-1 in the fifth when Daniel Schneemann walked, advanced to third on a fly ball and scored on a groundout by Patrick Bailey. The Angels tied the game in the sixth when Oswald Peraza tripled and scored on a lineout by Jo Adell.
The decisive moment came in the bottom of the seventh. With Petey Halpin running for Rhys Hoskins after a walk, Martínez singled to third base. Halpin advanced to third when third baseman Oswald Peraza made a throwing error. After David Fry flied out, Rocchio lifted a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Halpin and giving the Guardians a 3-2 lead.
Grissom countered with his solo home run in the top of the eighth, but Cleveland relievers Erik Sabrowski, Gaddis and Smith shut down the Angels the rest of the way. Sabrowski struck out three in a scoreless seventh, Gaddis worked the eighth, and Smith retired the side in order in the ninth, striking out Nolan Schanuel to end the game.
The Angels had eight hits, including two from Trout and two from Nolan Schanuel, but left nine runners on base. Trout doubled in the fifth and walked in the seventh, but was stranded both times. Jorge Soler doubled in the third with two runners on, but Vaughn Grissom struck out to end the threat.
Cleveland’s pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts, with Cecconi leading the way. The Guardians used five pitchers in total, with Cecconi’s performance standing out as the top star of the game. In his previous two starts, Cecconi had allowed a combined 16 hits and seven earned runs over 10 2/3 innings, but he was sharp Tuesday, working around five hits and two walks without allowing a run.
The Angels dropped to 16-27 overall and 8-17 on the road, while the Guardians improved to 23-21. The game drew an announced attendance of 16,355 and lasted 2 hours, 47 minutes.
Key performances included Ureña’s quality start that ended with a no-decision, Cecconi’s scoreless four-inning outing, Smith’s save and Grissom’s home run. Angel Martínez went 2 for 3 with a home run and an RBI, while Rocchio drove in the winning run.
The series continues Wednesday with a matinee, as the Angels try to avoid a sweep before heading home to face the Los Angeles Dodgers in a weekend interleague series.
