Giants rally late to top Dodgers 9‑3 at Dodger Stadium

LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The San Francisco Giants used a three-run seventh inning to break a tie and pulled away with three more in the ninth, beating the Los Angeles Dodgers 9-3 on Monday night at Dodger Stadium.

Rafael Devers homered and drove in two runs, Willy Adames had three RBIs on two hits and the Giants improved to 17-24. The Dodgers fell to 24-17 before a crowd of 44,298 in a game that lasted 3 hours, 3 minutes.

Giants starter Trevor McDonald worked 5 1/3 innings, allowing nine hits and three earned runs with four strikeouts. Matt Gage earned the win, his third against one loss, with 1 2/3 scoreless innings of one-hit relief, striking out one. JT Brubaker pitched a scoreless eighth with one strikeout.

Dodgers starter Roki Sasaki went five innings, yielding six hits and three earned runs with five strikeouts but did not factor in the decision. Alex Vesia took the loss, dropping to 1-1.

Max Muncy homered and drove in two runs for Los Angeles. Mookie Betts had two hits, and Freddie Freeman doubled and singled.

San Francisco struck first in the second inning. Devers led off by crushing his fifth home run of the season to right-center field, giving the Giants a 1-0 lead. The inning ended with three consecutive strikeouts, but the damage was done.

The Dodgers answered in the fourth. Freeman singled, Kyle Tucker singled and Will Smith loaded the bases with a single. Muncy then singled to right, scoring Freeman to make it 1-0. Andy Pages grounded into a double play, but Tucker scored on the play, tying the game 1-1. The Dodgers took a 2-1 lead on the play.

Los Angeles added to its lead in the sixth. Muncy led off with a solo home run to left-center, his 11th, extending the Dodgers’ advantage to 3-1.

The Giants responded immediately in the top of the sixth. Casey Schmitt singled, and Devers followed with a single to put runners at first and third. Heliot Ramos doubled to left, scoring Schmitt and Devers to tie the game at 3-3. Adames flew out, and Matt Chapman grounded into a fielder’s choice that cut down Ramos at the plate, but the Giants had pulled even.

The tie was short-lived. San Francisco’s seventh-inning rally began with a strikeout of Jesus Rodriguez. Jung Hoo Lee singled, and Luis Arraez singled to put runners on first and second. Schmitt singled to left, loading the bases. Devers walked, forcing in Lee to give the Giants a 4-3 lead. After Ramos struck out, Adames delivered the decisive blow — a single to right field that scored Arraez and Schmitt, pushing the lead to 6-3. Chapman grounded out to end the inning.

The Giants added three more runs in the ninth. Schmitt walked, Devers was intentionally walked by reliever Wyatt Mills, and Ramos walked to load the bases. Adames singled to left, scoring Schmitt to make it 7-3. Chapman walked, forcing in Devers for an 8-3 lead. After Harrison Bader lined out, Rodriguez grounded out, but Ramos scored on the play to make it 9-3. Lee was hit by a pitch, and Arraez grounded out to end the inning.

The Dodgers threatened in the eighth when Smith singled, but Muncy struck out and a forceout ended the inning. In the ninth, the Dodgers went down in order: Miguel Rojas groundout, Shohei Ohtani strikeout, Betts flyout.

The victory gave the Giants a 2-1 edge in the season series after the teams split a three-game set in San Francisco in late April. The Dodgers had won the opener of that series 3-0, but the Giants took the next two 3-0 and 3-1.

San Francisco entered Monday’s game having won two of its last three, including a 7-6, 12-inning win over Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Dodgers had lost two straight to Atlanta before Monday.

Roki Sasaki’s outing was his fifth quality start of the season, but the Dodgers’ bullpen faltered. Jack Dreyer allowed an inherited run to score in the seventh. Will Klein gave up a hit in two-thirds of an inning. Blake Treinen pitched a scoreless eighth.

For the Giants, McDonald was solid early but allowed the Dodgers to chip away. He left after allowing Muncy’s home run and a single to Teoscar Hernandez in the sixth. Gage entered and retired the side in order.

Devers finished 2 for 3 with a walk and two RBIs. Adames went 2 for 5 with three RBIs. Ramos had a double and a walk, scoring twice. Schmitt had two hits and scored three times. Lee had two hits.

Muncy led the Dodgers with two hits, including his home run. Freeman also had two hits. Smith and Tucker each had two singles. Betts had a single and a double.

The Giants’ defense turned two double plays, including a key one in the fourth that limited the Dodgers to two runs. The Dodgers challenged a play at first in the eighth, and the call was overturned, but the rally fizzled.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 4, San Francisco Giants 2. The Interstat ELO system gave the Dodgers a 68.80 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of 12 runs went under the over/under line of 9.5.

The two teams meet again Tuesday night in the second game of this three-game series. San Francisco continues its road trip with stops in Oakland, Arizona and Chicago. The Dodgers will face the Angels, Padres and Brewers after this series.
