Cleveland Guardians defeat Los Angeles Angels behind Cantillo’s six scoreless innings
CLEVELAND (Interstat) — Joey Cantillo pitched six scoreless innings, rookie Travis Bazzana capped a five-run third inning with a two-run double and the Cleveland Guardians defeated the Los Angeles Angels 7-2 on Monday night.
Cantillo (3-1) allowed five hits, walked one and struck out four. The left-hander retired the side in order in the first, fourth and fifth innings and worked around a leadoff single in the sixth by inducing a double-play groundout from Vaughn Grissom. Cantillo’s outing lowered his season ERA to 3.86 after he had allowed four earned runs in four innings against the Athletics on May 1.
Brayan Rocchio put the Guardians ahead 2-0 when he greeted reliever Jose Fermin with a single in the second inning after opener Brent Suter was lifted. Suter (1-2) started for the Angels and allowed two runs on two hits over 1 2/3 innings with one strikeout and one walk.
The Angels fell to 16-26, while the Guardians improved to 22-21.
Cleveland broke the game open with five runs in the third inning, all with two outs. After Suter left, the Guardians loaded the bases against Fermin on walks to Chase DeLauter, Rhys Hoskins and Kyle Manzardo. David Fry then walked to force in a run. Daniel Schneemann followed with a two-run single to right field. Bazzana capped the rally with a two-run double to left, giving Cleveland a 7-0 lead.
Bazzana finished 1 for 2 with two RBIs and two walks. Schneemann went 1 for 4 with two RBIs. Fry had two hits and an RBI. Manzardo collected two hits, including a double, and scored twice.
The Angels got both of their runs late. In the eighth inning, Jo Adell singled to center field off reliever Colin Holderman, scoring Jorge Soler. In the ninth, Vaughn Grissom singled sharply to left off Holderman, driving in Zach Neto. Holderman struck out three in one inning but allowed one earned run.
Alek Manoah provided a strong relief outing for the Angels, pitching five innings and allowing two hits with two strikeouts and three walks. He entered in the third after the Guardians had already taken a 7-0 lead and held them scoreless the rest of the way.
Mike Trout went 1 for 4 with a single and a walk. Jo Adell had two hits, including an RBI double. Nolan Schanuel doubled in the fourth inning.
The game was played at Progressive Field in front of 15,492 fans and lasted 3 hours, 1 minute.
The Angels had nine hits to the Guardians’ seven but stranded seven runners and went 2 for 12 with runners in scoring position. The Guardians capitalized on six walks issued by Angels pitchers.
The Guardians used three pitchers after Cantillo. Matt Festa tossed a scoreless seventh inning, allowing one hit and striking out one. Holderman worked the eighth and ninth, allowing two runs on three hits with three strikeouts.
For the Angels, Suter took the loss. Fermin allowed five runs on three hits and three walks in one inning of relief. The Angels’ pitching staff combined for 29 strikes, 55 balls and 29 balls in play. The Guardians’ staff combined for 15 strikes, 72 balls and 15 balls in play.
The win snapped a two-game losing streak for the Guardians, who had dropped three of their previous four games. The Angels had won their previous game Sunday against the Toronto Blue Jays but have lost seven of their last 10.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the third inning. After Suter departed with one out and a runner on second, the Guardians strung together five runs on three hits and three walks without making an out. The rally began with two outs and a 1-2 count on Fry, who worked a full-count walk to force in the first run. Schneemann then delivered the two-run single, and Bazzana followed with the double that cleared the bases. That inning gave the Guardians a commanding seven-run lead and effectively decided the outcome.
Cleveland’s next game is Tuesday against the Angels at home. The Angels will conclude their two-game series in Cleveland on Wednesday before returning home to face the Los Angeles Dodgers.
