Rodriguez Dominates, Diamondbacks Beat Mets 5‑1
PHOENIX (Interstat) — Eduardo Rodriguez came within two outs of his first complete game, Ryan Waldschmidt drove in three runs and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat the New York Mets 5-1 on Sunday evening at Chase Field.
Rodriguez took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, retiring the first 16 batters he faced before Carson Benge broke it up with a one-out single in the sixth. Rodriguez struck out four, walked three and allowed four hits in 8 1/3 innings, earning a standing ovation from the crowd of 40,170 as he departed after Mark Vientos’ bloop single in the ninth.
The Diamondbacks improved to 19-20, while the Mets dropped to 15-25 and fell to 1-2 in the three-game series. Arizona took two of three from New York, winning the series finale after splitting the first two games.
Arizona struck first with two runs in the second inning. Ildemaro Vargas led off with a walk, Nolan Arenado walked and James McCann sacrificed them to second and third. Jorge Barrosa struck out, but Waldschmidt delivered a sharp double to center field, scoring both Vargas and Arenado for a 2-0 lead.
The Mets answered in the sixth. Benge singled, and Luis Torrens doubled to right-center, scoring Benge to cut the deficit to 2-1. But Rodriguez retired Juan Soto on a flyout and induced a groundout from Austin Slater to strand Torrens at third.
Arizona broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth. Vargas reached on a throwing error by third baseman Andy Ibáñez, advanced on a flyout, and after McCann flied out, Barrosa singled to put runners at first and second. Waldschmidt then singled to center, scoring Vargas for a 3-1 lead. Ketel Marte followed with a triple to right field, clearing the bases and making it 5-1.
Rodriguez retired the side in order in the seventh and eighth, striking out two. He allowed a leadoff single to Torrens in the eighth but got Soto to fly out and Bo Bichette to ground out. In the ninth, Rodriguez got Austin Slater to strike out looking but yielded Vientos’ bloop single, ending his night. Juan Morillo relieved and got Marcus Semien to line out, then Brett Baty walked and MJ Melendez grounded out to end the game.
The game lasted 2 hours, 16 minutes.
Mets starter David Peterson turned in a strong outing, allowing four hits over five scoreless innings with three strikeouts and no walks. He worked around two walks in the first inning and an error in the fifth but never allowed a run. But the Mets bullpen faltered. Huascar Brazobán took the loss, allowing two earned runs in the sixth inning, including Marte’s triple. Tobias Myers pitched a scoreless inning with two strikeouts, and Sean Manaea struck out two in a perfect eighth.
Waldschmidt finished 2-for-4 with three RBI, his first multi-RBI game in the majors. Marte went 1-for-3 with a walk and two RBI. Torrens led the Mets with a 2-for-3 day, driving in their only run.
Defensively, the Mets committed two errors, both by Ibáñez at third base, leading to two unearned runs. Ibáñez also had a throwing error in the fourth that allowed Barrosa to reach, though no runs scored. Peterson’s throwing error in the fifth put Geraldo Perdomo on second, but Peterson stranded him.
Rodriguez improved to 4-0 with a 1.71 ERA. In his previous start May 5 against Pittsburgh, he threw seven shutout innings with seven strikeouts. On April 29 at Milwaukee, he allowed two runs in 4 2/3 innings. He has not lost a decision this season.
Brazobán fell to 2-1. He entered in the sixth and allowed two runs on three hits, including Waldschmidt’s single and Marte’s triple.
The Mets had won four of five on their road trip before losing the final two games. They opened the trip with a 5-2 record before Sunday’s loss. Arizona snapped a two-game losing streak after dropping the series opener Friday in extra innings and losing Saturday by a run.
The Mets return home to face the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday, then play the New York Yankees in a three-game Subway Series starting Friday. Arizona travels to Texas for a three-game set against the Rangers starting Monday.
