Turang’s walk-off homer lifts Brewers past Yankees 4‑3

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — Brice Turang homered off David Bednar with two outs in the ninth inning, lifting the Milwaukee Brewers to a 4-3 victory over the New York Yankees on Sunday and completing a three-game sweep.

Turang drove a 1-2 pitch from Bednar 411 feet over the center-field wall for his first career walk-off home run. The blast capped a tense afternoon at American Family Field before a crowd of 40,175 and gave Milwaukee its first sweep of the Yankees in a series of at least three games since August 1989.

The Brewers improved to 22-16 and moved to a major league-best 116-65 in interleague play since 2022. They are 14-7 against American League opponents this season.

New York dropped to 26-15. The Yankees had won seven of their previous nine games entering the series but managed only three runs in each of the three losses to Milwaukee.

Bednar, who took the loss, struck out Joey Ortiz and Jackson Chourio to start the ninth before Turang connected. The right-hander fell to 1-3.

Abner Uribe earned the win with a scoreless ninth inning, his second victory against one loss.

The Yankees struck first, as Aaron Judge led off the top of the first with his 16th home run of the season, a fly ball to right field off Brewers starter Logan Henderson. The solo shot gave New York a 1-0 lead.

New York added to its advantage in the second. Jose Caballero doubled sharply to center field and scored on a single by Spencer Jones, making it 2-0.

Henderson settled in after that, allowing only one more run over five innings. The right-hander finished with five innings, four hits, two earned runs and five strikeouts. He lowered his ERA to 3.86.

Yankees starter Carlos Rodon worked into the fifth inning but ran into trouble in the fourth. William Contreras and Gary Sanchez drew walks to start the inning, and Andrew Vaughn was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Luis Rengifo grounded into a forceout at home, but Garrett Mitchell followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Sanchez to cut the lead to 2-1.

Blake Perkins then lined a two-run single to center, scoring Vaughn and Rengifo, and the game was tied 3-3.

The Yankees regained the lead in the sixth. With one out, Judge walked and Cody Bellinger walked against Henderson. Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled to right field, scoring Bellinger to put New York ahead 3-3.

Henderson was lifted after the inning. Relievers Aaron Ashby, Trevor Megill and Uribe combined for four scoreless innings, allowing only one hit and striking out five.

New York’s bullpen kept the game tied. Fernando Cruz struck out three in 1 1/3 innings, and Paul Blackburn, Jake Bird and Tim Hill each contributed scoreless frames.

Milwaukee mounted a threat in the sixth when Rengifo reached on a throwing error by third baseman Ryan McMahon, but the Brewers could not capitalize. In the seventh, William Contreras singled with one out, but Cruz struck out Sanchez and Vaughn to end the inning.

The Brewers put another runner on in the eighth when Rengifo singled, but Garrett Mitchell grounded into a double play and Sal Frelick grounded out to end the inning.

Bednar entered for the ninth and retired the first two batters before Turang delivered the decisive blow.

Turang finished 2 for 4 with the homer and an RBI. He also had a sacrifice bunt in the first inning.

Henderson’s previous start came May 3 at Washington, when he allowed two earned runs over six innings in a loss.

New York lost for the second straight day after dropping Saturday’s game 4-3 and Friday’s 6-0. The Yankees had won four of five before arriving in Milwaukee.

Milwaukee’s win extended its interleague dominance. The Brewers have won 14 of their last 18 games against American League opponents.

New York heads to Baltimore for a three-game series beginning Monday. Milwaukee hosts San Diego for three games starting Tuesday.

Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of New York 7, Milwaukee 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 51.40 percent probability to win. New York was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of seven runs went over the over-under line of eight.
