Seattle Mariners at Chicago White Sox

CHICAGO (Interstat) — The Seattle Mariners and Chicago White Sox will play a split doubleheader Sunday at Guaranteed Rate Field, with the clubs seeking to gain footing in a tight American League race.

First pitch for the afternoon game is scheduled for 1:10 p.m., with the evening contest set for 6:40 p.m. The forecast calls for 72 degrees and clouds.

Seattle (19-21) will send right-hander Logan Gilbert (2-3) to the mound in the opener. Right-hander Davis Martin (5-1) is the probable starter for the nightcap. The White Sox had not named their starters for either game.

Chicago (18-21) took Saturday’s series opener 6-1 behind a strong start from Anthony Kay, who allowed three hits and no runs over five innings with five strikeouts. In relief, José Suarez worked two innings, giving up two hits and one earned run with three strikeouts.

Friday’s game saw Seattle win 12-8.

A player to watch for Seattle is Suarez, who worked in relief Saturday and will likely be available again from the bullpen. For Chicago, Kay’s recent outings have been mixed (Interstat) — he allowed two earned runs in five innings May 3 against San Diego, but gave up eight earned in 3⅔ innings April 22 at Arizona.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 5-4 Chicago victory in Sunday’s first game. Seattle opened as a -1.5 favorite on the spread, with an over/under of 7.5 runs.

Following Sunday’s doubleheader, Seattle travels to Houston for a four-game series beginning Monday. Chicago returns home to host Kansas City for three games starting Tuesday.
