Grichuk, White Sox rally past Mariners 2‑1

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Randal Grichuk homered to tie the game in the eighth inning and Drew Romo scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly, lifting the Chicago White Sox to a 2-1 victory over the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field.

Grichuk launched a 377-foot drive over the right field wall off Seattle reliever Eduard Bazardo to open the eighth and knot the score at 1. Romo then doubled to right field and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sam Antonacci. Bazardo intentionally walked Munetaka Murakami before Miguel Vargas lifted a fly ball to left fielder Randy Arozarena. Romo tagged up and scored when Arozarena’s throw sailed wide of the plate, giving Chicago a 2-1 lead.

The Mariners threatened in the ninth against White Sox closer Seranthony Domínguez. Connor Joe singled, J.P. Crawford singled, and Rob Refsnyder walked to load the bases with no outs. Domínguez induced a popout from Cole Young, then got Brendan Donovan to ground out to first base to end the game and secure his ninth save of the season.

Seattle opened the scoring in the first inning. Julio Rodríguez doubled to left field, Josh Naylor walked, and Arozarena singled to center. Center fielder Tristan Peters misplayed the ball for an error, allowing Rodríguez to score and Naylor to reach third. The rally stalled when Luke Raley struck out, but the Mariners held a 1-0 lead.

That advantage stood for the next six innings, thanks largely to Seattle starter Logan Gilbert. The right-hander worked six scoreless innings, allowing just one hit while striking out nine and walking none. He retired the first 11 batters he faced before Murakami singled with one out in the seventh. Gilbert left the game after the sixth having thrown 87 pitches.

White Sox starter Davis Martin matched Gilbert pitch for pitch. Martin also went six innings, yielding three hits and one unearned run while striking out nine. He walked two. The only run against him came on Arozarena’s first-inning single that was aided by the error. Martin departed after 97 pitches, having allowed only a double by Naylor in the third and a double by Joe in the seventh in addition to the first-inning single.

Chicago’s bullpen took over from there. Sean Newcomb pitched a scoreless seventh, allowing a double to Connor Joe but stranding him at third. Bryan Hudson worked the eighth, surrendering a single to Josh Naylor but retiring Cal Raleigh on a flyout to end the inning. Hudson earned the win, his first of the season against no losses.

Bazardo took the loss for Seattle. He pitched the eighth inning and allowed two runs on two hits, including Grichuk’s homer, and walked one intentionally. His record fell to 2-2. José A. Ferrer pitched a scoreless seventh for Seattle, allowing two hits but escaping a bases-loaded jam when Peters grounded out.

Seattle had opportunities throughout the game but could not add to its lead. The Mariners put runners on base in the third, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth innings but went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Naylor had two hits, including a double, and finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Connor Joe came off the bench in the seventh and doubled, then singled in the ninth. He finished 2-for-2.

The White Sox managed only five hits total. Grichuk’s homer was his second of the season. Vargas doubled in the first inning and drove in the go-ahead run with his sacrifice fly. Romo doubled and scored the decisive run. Murakami singled. Chase Meidroth singled in the seventh.

The game was the rubber match of a three-game series. Chicago won Saturday’s game 6-1 after Seattle won the opener 12-8 on Friday. The White Sox improved to 19-21, while the Mariners dropped to 19-22.

Seattle begins a four-game road series Monday at Houston. The Mariners then return home to host San Diego for three games before Chicago visits Seattle for a three-game set starting May 18.
