Bassitt’s relief effort lifts Orioles past Athletics 2‑1

BALTIMORE (Interstat) -- Chris Bassitt pitched six innings of one-run relief and the Baltimore Orioles edged the Athletics 2-1 on Sunday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

The Orioles used a pregame pitching change, inserting Keegan Akin for a 1-2-3 first before Bassitt took over. Bassitt (3-2) allowed four hits and struck out six, yielding only a second-inning run on Carlos Cortes’ sacrifice fly.

Baltimore tied the game in the third when Gunnar Henderson singled home Dylan Beavers. Beavers then delivered the go-ahead RBI single in the sixth off Athletics starter Luis Severino (2-4). Severino allowed two runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings with four strikeouts.

Rico Garcia worked a perfect ninth for his third save. Leody Taveras threw out the potential tying run at the plate in the seventh to preserve the lead. Attendance was 24,213, and the game lasted 2 hours, 40 minutes. The Athletics fell to 21-19, while Baltimore improved to 18-23.
