Strider dominates as Braves beat Dodgers 7‑2
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — Spencer Strider pitched six dominant innings, allowing one hit and striking out eight, and the Atlanta Braves used a four-run second inning to beat the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 on Saturday night at Dodger Stadium.
The Braves improved to 27-13, while the Dodgers dropped to 24-15 before a crowd of 50,209. The game lasted 2 hours, 46 minutes.
Strider, making his second start of the season after a brief stint on the injured list, retired the first nine batters he faced. He did not allow a baserunner until Will Smith singled with two outs in the fourth inning. Strider walked two and threw 54 of his 108 pitches for strikes. The right-hander got 27 balls in play and 27 strikes, with the Dodgers putting only six balls in play against him in the first three innings.
Atlanta provided Strider an early cushion. The Braves loaded the bases with no outs in the first inning on a single by Mauricio Dubón, a walk to Drake Baldwin and an infield single by Ozzie Albies. Matt Olson struck out, but Austin Riley grounded into a force out that scored Dubón. Michael Harris II struck out to end the inning, with Atlanta ahead 1-0.
The Braves broke the game open in the second inning against Dodgers starter Blake Snell. Sean Murphy struck out to start the inning, but Eli White singled and Jorge Mateo singled, putting runners at first and second. Dubón lined out, but Baldwin walked to load the bases. Albies then singled to left field, scoring White and Mateo. Olson followed with a sharp line-drive single to center that drove in Baldwin and Albies, making it 5-0.
Snell was pulled after two innings, charged with five runs on five hits and three walks. He struck out two and fell to 0-1 on the season.
The Dodgers could not solve Strider. After Smith’s single in the fourth, Strider induced a force out from Kyle Tucker and a groundout from Andy Pages. He struck out Max Muncy, Teoscar Hernández and Hyeseong Kim in order during the second, then worked around a walk in the fifth by getting Alex Freeland to strike out. Strider faced the minimum through six innings, allowing only Smith’s hit and a walk to Teoscar Hernández that was erased on a force out.
Atlanta added a run in the fifth off Dodgers reliever Jack Dreyer. Austin Riley walked, and Harris doubled to right field, scoring Riley. The Braves made it 7-0 in the eighth against Edgardo Henriquez. With two outs, Mateo singled, Dubón walked and Baldwin singled to right, scoring Mateo.
Dreyer pitched 1 1/3 innings of scoreless relief, allowing one hit and striking out none. Paul Gervase took over in the sixth and threw three innings, giving up four hits and one run while striking out five.
The Dodgers mounted a two-out rally in the ninth against Braves reliever Reynaldo López. Alex Call doubled to left field, and Andy Pages hit a home run to left-center field, his ninth of the season, cutting the deficit to 7-2. Santiago Espinal lined out, but Teoscar Hernández singled. The game ended when Hyeseong Kim grounded out to first base on a play that was reviewed and upheld.
López pitched the final two innings, allowing four hits and two runs while striking out one.
Ozzie Albies and Matt Olson each drove in two runs for Atlanta. Albies went 2 for 5, and Olson was 2 for 5. Dubón had three hits and scored twice. Baldwin walked twice and drove in a run.
For the Dodgers, Pages went 2 for 4 with two RBIs and a home run. Smith had the only hit off Strider. Call doubled in the ninth.
Dylan Lee pitched a scoreless seventh inning for Atlanta, allowing one hit and striking out none.
The Braves won despite leaving 12 runners on base. The Dodgers left four.
Atlanta’s victory evened the weekend series after the Dodgers won 3-1 on Friday night. The teams conclude the series Sunday afternoon. The Braves return home Tuesday to face the Chicago Cubs, while the Dodgers host the San Francisco Giants on Monday.
Atlanta’s offense has been productive during its road trip. The Braves scored at least seven runs for the fourth time in their last six games. They had 12 hits Saturday, their second-highest total in that stretch.
Strider’s performance was a sharp turnaround from his previous start. On May 3 at Colorado, he lasted only 3 1/3 innings, allowing four hits and three runs while striking out six. Against the Dodgers, he threw 60 of his 102 pitches for strikes and did not allow an extra-base hit.
The Dodgers managed only six hits, with none for extra bases until the ninth. Snell, making his third start of the season, struggled with command. He walked three batters in the first two innings and threw only 18 strikes in his 68-pitch outing. The Dodgers used five pitchers in total, with Gervase providing the longest relief appearance.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Atlanta Braves 8, Los Angeles Dodgers 5. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Dodgers a 62.30 percent probability to win. Los Angeles was a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total of nine runs went over the over-under line of 9.5.
