Marlins rally from four-run deficit to beat Nationals 8‑7 Saturday

MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. (Interstat) — Kyle Stowers went 3 for 4 with a home run and two RBIs, and Jakob Marsee delivered a tiebreaking three-run homer in the eighth inning as the Miami Marlins rallied past the Washington Nationals 8-7 on Saturday evening at loanDepot Park.

The Marlins, who entered the game with an 18-22 record, improved to 19-22 while the Nationals fell to 19-21. Andrew Nardi earned the win, improving to 3-2, and John King recorded his first save of the season with one-third of an inning of scoreless relief. Mitchell Parker took the loss, falling to 2-1.

Washington jumped out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the first inning. James Wood led off the game with his 11th home run of the season, a fly ball to right-center field. After Luis García Jr. singled and Brady House doubled, CJ Abrams singled to drive in both runners, giving the Nationals a 3-0 advantage.

The Nationals added a run in the third inning when Abrams tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Daylen Lile, extending the lead to 4-0.

Miami got on the board in the fourth inning when Stowers hit his first home run of the season, a two-run shot to right field that scored Otto Lopez, who had singled earlier in the inning. The Marlins cut the deficit to 4-2.

The Marlins continued to chip away. In the sixth inning, Connor Norby reached on an error, stole third base and scored on a sacrifice fly by Owen Caissie, making it 4-3. Marsee hit a line drive home run to right field, his second of the season, scoring Stowers and Norby to give Miami a 7-4 lead. Esteury Ruiz followed with a double to left field, and after a sacrifice fly by Leo Jiménez, Ruiz scored to make it 8-4.

Washington mounted a comeback in the top of the ninth. José Tena led off with a double, and Drew Millas singled to drive him in, cutting the deficit to 8-5. After a popout, Wood doubled, putting runners at second and third. García Jr. then singled to center field, scoring Millas and Wood and bringing the Nationals within one run at 8-7. But the rally fell short when Jorbit Vivas grounded into a fielder’s choice and Abrams flied out to center field.
