New York Mets at Arizona Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (Interstat) — The New York Mets, losers of five of their last six, open a three-game series against the Arizona Diamondbacks on Friday night at Chase Field.

Rookie right-hander Nolan McLean (1-2) is scheduled to start for New York, which owns the worst record in the National League at 14-23. McLean allowed one earned run over 4 2/3 innings in a 6-2 loss at Colorado on May 7, his third start of the season. The Mets are 1-2 in his outings.

Arizona (17-19) counters with right-hander Zac Gallen, who is seeking to reverse a recent skid. Gallen has lost three consecutive decisions, most recently surrendering four earned runs on six hits over six innings in a 4-2 home loss to Pittsburgh on May 7. In his previous start, he was tagged for six earned runs in 3 2/3 innings at Chicago.

The Diamondbacks took two of three from the Mets in New York from April 7-9, winning 7-1 and 7-2 after dropping the opener 4-3. Arizona has dropped three of its last four overall, while the Mets are coming off a 2-6 loss at Colorado on Thursday.

New York right-hander Christian Scott, a reliever who recently moved into a swing role, has been effective. Over his past three appearances, Scott has allowed three earned runs over 11 innings with 15 strikeouts. He pitched 4 2/3 innings of one-run ball in the loss to Colorado.

Arizona outfielder Corbin Carroll homered and drove in a run in Thursday’s loss to Pittsburgh and is 6 for his last 22 with two homers.

Despite the Mets’ poor record, bookmakers installed New York as a minus-1.5 favorite. The over/under is 8.5 runs. One game simulator projects a 4-3 Arizona win.

Following Friday’s series opener, the teams play Saturday and Sunday before the Mets return home to host Detroit.
