Vientos’ double in 10th lifts Mets past Diamondbacks 3‑1

PHOENIX (Interstat) — Mark Vientos homered and doubled, driving in two runs, and the New York Mets defeated the Arizona Diamondbacks 3-1 in 10 innings Friday night at Chase Field.

Vientos led off the 10th with a tiebreaking double down the left-field line on the first pitch from Kevin Ginkel, scoring automatic runner Brett Baty from second base. Carson Benge followed with a ground-rule double to left-center field that scored pinch-runner Vidal Brujan and gave the Mets a 3-1 lead. The two-out rally extended New York’s winning streak to four of five after a stretch in which the team lost 17 of 20 overall.

The Mets (15-23) are 5-2 on a nine-game road trip and have won three consecutive games away from home. They dropped the first two games of the season series to Arizona in early April before taking the third meeting. Friday’s victory moved them within two games of the Diamondbacks (17-20) in the National League standings.

Vientos put the Mets ahead in the second inning with a solo home run to left-center field, his fifth of the season. The Diamondbacks answered in the bottom of the second when Nolan Arenado homered to left field, his sixth, to tie the game at 1-1. Neither team scored again until the 10th.

Arizona starting pitcher Ryne Nelson turned in a strong outing, allowing one run on two hits over 6 2/3 innings with seven strikeouts. He left after the Mets went quietly in the seventh, but the bullpen could not keep the game tied. Ginkel, the losing pitcher, allowed three hits and one earned run in one-third of an inning while striking out one. Jonathan Loáisiga relieved Ginkel and recorded two outs without allowing a hit.

Mets starter Nolan McLean pitched five innings, allowing one run on three hits with five strikeouts and two walks. Devin Williams (2-1) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to earn the win, and Tobias Myers pitched the 10th for his first save of the season. Myers struck out two and allowed no hits.

The Mets had five hits, as did the Diamondbacks. Vientos was the only player on either team with multiple hits, finishing 2 for 4 with a home run and a double. Arenado accounted for Arizona’s only run with his solo shot. Geraldo Perdomo went 0 for 5 for the Diamondbacks, and Adrian Del Castillo finished 0 for 3. Ryan Waldschmidt came off the bench and singled in the eighth inning, but Arizona could not push the go-ahead run across.

The game lasted 2 hours 44 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 30,599.

New York’s recent turnaround follows a brutal stretch in which the team lost 17 of 20 from mid-April to early May. The Mets have now won four of their last five, including a 10-5 victory at Colorado on Wednesday and a 4-2 win over the Rockies on Monday. Arizona, meanwhile, dropped to 1-3 on its current homestand after losing two of three to Pittsburgh earlier in the week.

The teams will meet again Saturday and Sunday to complete the three-game series before the Mets return home to face Detroit and the Diamondbacks travel to Texas.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 4, New York 3. Interstat’s ELO system gave Arizona a 56.30 percent probability to win. The Mets were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 4 went over the over-under line of 8.5.
