Giants edge Padres 3‑2 behind McDonald’s strong debut

SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Trevor McDonald pitched seven crisp innings in his season debut and the San Francisco Giants beat the San Diego Padres 3-2 on Monday night before 33,097 at Oracle Park.

McDonald (1-0), called up from Triple-A Sacramento earlier in the day, allowed one run and two hits with eight strikeouts. He matched his career high of seven innings, helping the Giants end a six-game losing streak in their first home game after an 0-6 road trip.

Casey Schmitt hit a solo home run, Luis Arraez had two doubles and scored twice, and Rafael Devers drove in two runs for San Francisco.

Jackson Merrill homered for San Diego, which managed only three hits. Ramón Laureano also homered for the Padres in the ninth inning.

The game turned in the bottom of the sixth inning with the score tied 2-2. Arraez led off with a double to left field off Padres starter Randy Vásquez (3-1). Heliot Ramos grounded out, moving Arraez to third, before Devers lifted a sacrifice fly to right fielder Fernando Tatis Jr. that scored Arraez and put the Giants ahead for good.

McDonald was sharp from the outset. He retired the first two Padres batters in the top of the first before Merrill connected for a home run to center field, his fourth of the season, giving San Diego a 1-0 lead.

The Giants answered quickly in the bottom of the first. After Jung Hoo Lee grounded out, Schmitt homered to left field, his fifth, tying the game. Arraez followed with a double, and after Heliot Ramos reached on a fielder’s choice, Devers singled to center field, scoring Arraez to put San Francisco ahead 2-1.

McDonald settled in after that, facing the minimum through the next four innings. He was struck near his right hip by a 102.9 mph line drive off the bat of Miguel Andujar leading off the fifth but remained in the game and retired the next two batters.

San Diego tied the game in the top of the ninth when Laureano led off with a home run to center field off Giants closer Caleb Kilian. But Kilian struck out Tatis, got Merrill to ground out, and struck out Manny Machado to earn his first save of the season.

Randy Vásquez took the loss after allowing three runs on five hits over 5 2/3 innings. He struck out two and walked two.

Bradgley Rodriguez pitched 1 1/3 scoreless innings of relief for San Diego, striking out one. Kyle Hart recorded one strikeout in a third of an inning.

The Giants bullpen held the Padres to one hit over the final two innings. Keaton Winn pitched a perfect eighth inning with one strikeout.
