Royals complete three-game sweep of Mariners with 4‑1 win

SEATTLE (Interstat) — Kris Bubic pitched six strong innings and the Kansas City Royals used a three-run fourth inning to defeat the Seattle Mariners 4-1 on Sunday afternoon at T-Mobile Park, completing a three-game sweep.

The Royals, who entered the series having lost four of their previous five games, improved to 15-19. The Mariners dropped to 16-19 and have lost three straight.

Bubic (3-1) allowed one run on four hits over six innings, striking out six and walking two. He retired the side in order in the first and fourth innings and worked out of a jam in the second. Daniel Lynch IV pitched a scoreless ninth for his first save of the season.

Luis Castillo (0-3) took the loss, allowing four runs on six hits over six innings. He struck out five and walked three.

The Mariners struck first in the third inning. Leo Rivas led off with a walk, advanced to third on a single by Julio Rodriguez and scored on a fielder’s choice groundout by Josh Naylor. The Royals answered in the fourth.

Bobby Witt Jr. singled to center, Vinnie Pasquantino singled to right to put runners on the corners and Salvador Perez was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Carter Jensen walked to force in Witt, tying the game. Jac Caglianone then grounded into a forceout, scoring Pasquantino, and Isaac Collins followed with a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Perez to make it 3-1.

Kansas City extended the lead in the sixth. Caglianone walked, stole second and scored on a double to center by Collins, his third double of the season.

The Royals had eight hits, including two from Witt and two from Pasquantino. The Mariners managed only four hits, with Rodriguez, J.P. Crawford, Cole Young and Naylor each getting one.

Seattle threatened in the eighth when Dominic Canzone walked with one out, but Rodriguez grounded into a forceout and Naylor struck out. In the ninth, Lynch retired Randy Arozarena, Crawford and Young in order, striking out the final two batters.

The win gave Kansas City its first series sweep in Seattle since August 2022. The Royals had lost the previous two series at T-Mobile Park. Sunday’s victory also marked the first time the Royals have won three straight games since a three-game sweep of the Chicago White Sox from April 10-12.

Seattle’s offense has struggled during the losing streak, scoring a total of nine runs in the three games against Kansas City. The Mariners have lost five of their last seven overall.

Kansas City will return home to host Cleveland for a four-game series beginning Monday. Seattle will host Atlanta for a three-game set starting Monday.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Seattle 6, Kansas City 4, and its ELO system gave Seattle a 59.2 percent probability to win. Kansas City was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of five runs went over the over-under line of eight.
