Heim’s 5 RBIs power Braves past Rockies 11‑6
DENVER (Interstat) — Jonah Heim homered, doubled and drove in five runs, and the Atlanta Braves defeated the Colorado Rockies 11-6 on Sunday afternoon at Coors Field to complete a three-game sweep.
Heim’s two-run homer in the second inning sparked a three-run burst, and he added a two-run double in the ninth inning to break open a one-run game. Jorge Mateo also homered and drove in two runs for the Braves, who improved to 25-10, the best record in the National League.
Spencer Strider made his season debut for Atlanta after recovering from an oblique injury suffered in spring training. The right-hander allowed three runs on four hits over 3 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking five. He exited with the game tied at 3.
Aaron Bummer (1-1) earned the win in relief, allowing two runs on one hit over one inning. Bummer entered with one out in the fourth after Strider left and surrendered a two-run homer to Mickey Moniak that gave Colorado a 5-4 lead.
Atlanta quickly responded. In the fifth inning, the Braves loaded the bases with no outs against Rockies starter Kyle Freeland (1-3). Austin Riley singled in a run, Eli White drew a walk to force in another and Heim’s sacrifice fly plated a third, putting Atlanta ahead 7-5.
Colorado got one back in the bottom of the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Ezequiel Tovar, making it 7-6. But Braves relievers Didier Fuentes, Dylan Lee and Reynaldo López combined for 3 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out five.
The game turned decisively in the ninth. With the score still 8-6 after Moniak’s second homer of the game in the eighth, Atlanta padded its lead against Rockies reliever Victor Vodnik. Ozzie Albies walked, and after two fly outs, White singled. Heim then doubled to right-center, scoring Albies and White. Mateo followed with an RBI single to make it 11-6.
Heim, who entered the game in a 2-for-12 slump over his previous four games, finished 2-for-4. His two-run homer in the second inning came after Matt Olson led off the frame with a double. Mateo followed Heim’s blast with a solo shot to left, giving Atlanta a 3-1 lead.
Colorado had taken a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by TJ Rumfield after a walk and a stolen base. The Rockies tied the game in the third on Rumfield’s solo homer, then surged ahead in the fourth when Moniak launched a two-run homer to right after a triple by Jake McCarthy.
Rumfield had three hits, including a homer and two RBIs, for Colorado. Moniak went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBIs.
Moniak’s second homer, a solo shot in the eighth, cut Atlanta’s lead to 8-6. But the Braves bullpen retired the final four Rockies batters in order. Lee struck out two in a perfect eighth, and López worked around a single in the ninth to close it out.
The Braves finished with 14 hits. Olson doubled twice and drove in a run. Ozzie Albies had two hits and two runs scored. Matt Olson also walked and scored twice. Eli White tripled and singled, scoring once.
Colorado managed 11 hits but left 10 runners on base. The Rockies were 3-for-12 with runners in scoring position. Atlanta was 5-for-14.
The game lasted 3 hours, 8 minutes before an announced crowd of 32,994.
Atlanta has now won five straight games and nine of its last 10. The Braves swept the Rockies in a three-game series for the second time this season, having taken two of three at Truist Park in April. Colorado fell to 14-21, losing its fifth straight.
The Braves travel to Seattle for a three-game series starting Monday. The Rockies return home to host the New York Mets.
Interstat’s game simulator projected a final score of Atlanta 7, Colorado 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave the Braves a 70.20 percent probability to win. Atlanta was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5 runs. The combined score of 17 went under the over-under line of 10.5.
