Yankees rout Orioles 11‑3 behind Domínguez’s big inning

NEW YORK (Interstat) — The New York Yankees broke open a close game with a seven-run eighth inning to rout the Baltimore Orioles 11-3 on Sunday afternoon at Yankee Stadium II, completing a three-game sweep.

The victory extended New York’s winning streak to three games and improved its record to 23-11, tops in the American League East. Baltimore fell to 15-19 after its third straight loss in the series.

Jasson Domínguez, the designated hitter, led the Yankees’ offense with three hits, including a home run and a double, and drove in three runs. He went 3 for 5 after a 1-for-14 stretch over his previous four games, including 0 for 1 in Friday’s series opener and an 0-for-4 on Saturday.

Ben Rice opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning with a solo home run, his 12th of the season, giving New York a 1-0 lead. The Orioles answered in the third inning when Blaze Alexander singled in Weston Wilson and was thrown out trying to stretch it into a double. They took a 2-1 lead in the fourth on a run-scoring single by Leody Taveras and a double-play groundout that brought home Tyler O’Neill.

New York tied the game in the bottom of the third when Aaron Judge hit a two-run homer, his 13th, after Rice had doubled. The game remained 3-3 until the sixth inning, when Ryan McMahon singled to drive in Domínguez, who had doubled, putting the Yankees ahead 4-3.

The decisive eighth inning began with a single by Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Domínguez’s home run to right-center field, his first of the season, making it 6-3. Austin Wells singled, and McMahon singled to put runners at first and second. José Caballero bunted for a single to load the bases. Trent Grisham lifted a sacrifice fly to left field, scoring Wells. Paul Goldschmidt then singled to center, driving in McMahon and Caballero for an 8-3 lead. Judge singled, Cody Bellinger walked to load the bases, and Chisholm hit another sacrifice fly. Domínguez capped the inning with a double that scored Judge, making it 11-3.

Baltimore had taken a 3-2 lead with two runs in the fourth but managed only nine hits overall. Pete Alonso doubled and scored in the fourth, and the Orioles put a runner in scoring position in the seventh but could not score. They left five runners on base and struck out 10 times.

Yankees left-hander Max Fried allowed three runs on six hits over 5 1/3 innings, striking out six and walking two. He did not factor in the decision. Reliever Brent Headrick tossed 1 2/3 scoreless innings, and Fernando Cruz pitched a perfect eighth inning to earn the win, improving to 3-0. David Bednar worked a scoreless ninth with two strikeouts.

Orioles starter Grant Wolfram took the loss, falling to 1-1. He gave up four runs on four hits over 4 2/3 innings, striking out two and walking three. Trey Gibson followed with 4 2/3 innings of three-run relief. Yennier Cano recorded two outs without allowing a hit.

Judge finished 2 for 4 with a home run, two RBIs and a walk. Rice went 2 for 2 with a homer and a double, and McMahon was 3 for 4 with an RBI. For the Orioles, Blaze Alexander had two hits and a run batted in, and Leody Taveras drove in a run.

The Yankees also received contributions from Ryan McMahon, who doubled in the second inning and singled in the sixth and eighth. Goldschmidt had two RBIs on a single in the eighth. Trent Grisham made a sacrifice fly in the eighth.

Baltimore’s best chance to extend its lead came in the top of the fifth, when Alexander singled and advanced to second on a groundout, but Pete Alonso struck out to end the inning.

The Orioles had taken a 1-0 lead in the top of the third when Weston Wilson singled and later scored on Alexander’s single. Baltimore added two more in the top of the fourth on Taveras’ single and a double-play grounder.

New York answered with Judge’s two-run homer in the bottom of the third to tie the game at 3-3. The game remained tied until the bottom of the sixth, when McMahon’s single plated Domínguez.

The Yankees’ eight-run outburst in the eighth inning matched their highest single-inning output of the season. The last time they scored seven or more in an inning was April 24 at Houston, when they scored eight in the fifth inning.

The Orioles have lost five of their last six games, while the Yankees have won eight of their last 10.

The teams will meet again Monday afternoon at Yankee Stadium in the finale of the four-game series. Baltimore then travels to Miami for a three-game set, while New York hosts Texas for three games beginning Tuesday.
