New York Mets at Los Angeles Angels

ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — The New York Mets and Los Angeles Angels meet Friday at Angel Stadium, both teams looking to climb out of early-season holes. First pitch is set for 6:38 p.m. PDT under clear skies and 67 degrees.

Right-hander Christian Scott (0-0) is the probable starter for the Mets, making his season debut. The 25-year-old will oppose Angels right-hander Walbert Urena (0-3, 5.40 ERA), who is still seeking his first win.

The Mets (10-21) have lost seven of their last eight games, including a 5-4 defeat Thursday against Washington despite a strong start from Freddy Peralta. Peralta, a right-hander who has primarily worked out of the rotation, pitched six innings, allowing one earned run on four hits with six strikeouts. He is a player to watch for New York; over his last five starts, including a win April 7 against Arizona, Peralta has posted a 2.55 ERA with 28 strikeouts in 28 innings.

The Angels (12-20) have dropped five straight, including a 3-2, 10-inning loss Wednesday at the Chicago White Sox. Relief pitcher Mitch Farris is a key arm to watch for Los Angeles. In that game, he allowed one run on three hits over 3 ²/₃ innings with three strikeouts. Farris has appeared in four games this season, posting a 2.25 ERA with six strikeouts in eight innings.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 2-1 Mets victory, and its ELO system gives New York a 54.4 percent probability of winning. The Mets enter as 1.5-run favorites, with the over/under set at 9.

New York has struggled offensively, scoring three or fewer runs in nine of its last 12 games. The Mets’ most productive hitter in Thursday’s loss was left fielder MJ Melendez, who went 2 for 2 with a home run and three RBIs.

Los Angeles has lost 13 of its last 15 games and has scored two runs or fewer in eight of those defeats.

The teams are scheduled to play the second game of this three-game series Saturday.
