Mets rally past Angels 4‑3 behind Christian Scott’s strong start
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — The New York Mets rallied from a three-run deficit with a three-run sixth inning and added a solo home run in the seventh to defeat the Los Angeles Angels 4-3 on Friday night at Angel Stadium of Anaheim.
The Mets improved to 11-21 with the victory, while the Angels fell to 12-21. The game lasted 2 hours, 34 minutes in front of an announced crowd of 43,959.
Angels designated hitter Jorge Soler opened the scoring with a two-run home run in the first inning, his seventh of the season, driving in Mike Trout after Trout had singled. The Angels added a run in the third inning when Zach Neto was hit by a pitch, advanced on a strikeout and then scored on a passed ball or wild pitch, depending on the official scoring, though the play-by-play shows Yoán Moncada struck out swinging and Neto moved to second, then Soler grounded out. The third-inning run gave Los Angeles a 3-0 lead.
Mets starter Christian Scott delivered a strong outing, pitching five innings and allowing three hits and two earned runs while striking out eight. Scott’s performance was particularly crucial given that the Mets had lost four of their previous five games entering Friday, including a 5-4 defeat to the Washington Nationals on Thursday. Scott, who had pitched only 1 1/3 innings in his previous appearance April 23 against Minnesota, gave his team a chance to recover from the early deficit.
The Mets’ offense remained quiet through the first five innings against Angels starter Walbert Ureña, who allowed only two hits and one earned run over five innings while striking out four. Ureña faced the minimum through three innings and worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the fourth.
The breakthrough came in the sixth inning. Bo Bichette led off with a single, and Juan Soto followed with a single to put runners at first and second. After Austin Slater struck out, Francisco Alvarez singled to center field, scoring Bichette and sending Soto to second. Brett Baty grounded out, moving Soto to third and Alvarez to second. Marcus Semien then singled to center, scoring both Soto and Alvarez to tie the game at 3-3. The Mets’ three-run rally came on three hits and gave them their first lead of the game.
In the seventh inning, Ronny Mauricio provided an insurance run with his first home run of the season, a line drive to center field off Angels reliever José Fermín, who took the loss. Fermín pitched 0 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and one earned run, falling to 0-1 on the season.
The Mets’ bullpen then shut down the Angels over the final three innings. Luke Weaver pitched a scoreless sixth, striking out two. Nick Sandlin of the Angels had pitched two scoreless innings in relief, but the damage had been done by the Mets’ sixth-inning outburst. Brooks Raley struck out one in a scoreless seventh. Huascar Brazobán earned the win, pitching a scoreless inning with one strikeout, improving to 2-0. Devin Williams pitched a perfect ninth inning, striking out two to earn his third save of the season.
Angels batters managed only three hits in the game, a season low for the club. Trout had a single and scored on Soler’s home run. Nolan Schanuel added a single in the first inning. The Angels struck out 14 times overall, with Mets pitchers combining for 14 strikeouts. Scott’s eight strikeouts led the staff, while Williams recorded two and Raley and Brazobán each had one.
The game turned on the Mets’ ability to capitalize in the sixth inning after being held to two hits through five frames. Bichette and Soto each had two hits on the night. Bichette finished 2-for-4 with a run scored. Mauricio went 1-for-3 with the home run and an RBI. Marcus Semien drove in two runs with his sixth-inning single.
For the Angels, Ureña’s quality start was undone by the bullpen. After Ureña exited, Fermín allowed the go-ahead home run to Mauricio. Sandlin pitched two scoreless innings in relief, but the Angels could not generate any offense after the third inning. Their last hit came in the first inning. The Angels went down in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth innings.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza’s bullpen decisions paid off as five relievers combined for four scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out six. The Angels bullpen, by contrast, allowed two earned runs over four innings.
The Mets’ recent struggles had seen them lose seven of their previous nine games, including series losses to Colorado and Washington. The win snapped a two-game losing streak. The Angels, meanwhile, had dropped seven of their previous eight games entering Friday, with their only win in that span coming against Toronto on April 22.
The game featured several defensive plays, including a double play turned by the Mets in the third inning when Mauricio grounded into a 4-6-3 twin killing. The Angels also turned a double play in the eighth inning when Alvarez hit into a 6-4-3 double play. Brett Baty was caught stealing second base in the top of the eighth after a challenge by the Mets upheld the call.
The Mets’ next game is Saturday against the Angels, continuing a three-game series. The Angels then host the Chicago White Sox for a three-game set beginning Monday.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of New York Mets 2, Los Angeles Angels 3. Interstat’s ELO system had projected the Mets with a 54.40 percent probability to win. The Mets had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 9.
