San Francisco Giants at Tampa Bay Rays

TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — The Tampa Bay Rays host the San Francisco Giants on Friday at 6:40 p.m. at George Steinbrenner Field in a matchup of teams heading in opposite directions. Tampa Bay carries an 18-12 record into the game, while San Francisco enters at 13-17. The forecast calls for 78 degrees and cloudy skies.

San Francisco left-hander Shane McClanahan (2-2) will start opposite Tampa Bay right-hander Drew Rasmussen. McClanahan has struggled after a strong start, allowing four earned runs in consecutive outings against Baltimore and Washington. Rasmussen has been effective, striking out six over six innings of one-hit ball against the New York Yankees on April 12.

Giants right-hander Logan Webb is a player to watch. Webb has pitched seven innings in three of his last four starts, allowing one earned run against both Philadelphia and the New York Mets, but San Francisco has lost each of those outings because of a lack of run support. Webb is 0-3 over that stretch despite a 2.84 ERA.

For Tampa Bay, Rasmussen has been a steady presence. He has struck out six in each of his last two outings and has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his four most recent starts. He will look to give a deep outing after throwing only 3 2/3 innings against Pittsburgh on April 18.

The Rays have won six of their last eight, while the Giants have dropped seven of their last 10. San Francisco was shut out 7-0 by Philadelphia on Tuesday, while Tampa Bay lost 3-1 to Cleveland on Wednesday. Matt Gage threw a scoreless inning for the Giants in that loss, and Yoendrys Gómez did the same for Tampa Bay.

Tampa Bay is a -1.5 favorite in the betting line, with an over/under of 7.5 runs. Interstat’s game simulator projects a 7-6 Rays victory.

The teams play again Saturday and Sunday at Steinbrenner Field. San Francisco then returns home to host San Diego on Monday, while Tampa Bay welcomes Toronto for a three-game series.
