Rays shut out Giants 3‑0 behind McClanahan’s strong start
TAMPA, Fla. (Interstat) — Shane McClanahan tossed six innings of five-hit shutout ball, Yandy Díaz and Junior Caminero hit solo home runs, and the Tampa Bay Rays blanked the San Francisco Giants 3-0 on Friday, May 1, at George Steinbrenner Field in front of 13,330 fans.
The game took just 2 hours, 3 minutes as the Rays improved to 19-12, while the Giants fell to 13-19.
McClanahan (3-2) struck out five, walked none and allowed only five singles over six innings. He retired the final seven batters he faced and induced two inning-ending double plays. Robbie Ray (2-4) took the loss for San Francisco, allowing three runs on four hits in six innings, striking out three and walking none.
The Rays struck first in the bottom of the second when Díaz launched a 1-1 pitch to right field for his fifth home run of the season, giving Tampa Bay a 1-0 lead. Caminero added to the advantage in the fourth inning, crushing his ninth homer to left field to make it 2-0.
The most important sequence of the game came in the bottom of the sixth. Taylor Walls led off with a double to center, moved to third on a sacrifice fly by Chandler Simpson, and scored on the play to extend the lead to 3-0. Simpson’s fly ball to left field brought home Walls with the game’s final run, giving the Rays a three-run cushion they would not relinquish.
San Francisco managed six hits but could not push a run across. The Giants had a runner in scoring position in each of the second, fifth and seventh innings but came up empty. In the fourth, Luis Arraez doubled to right but was thrown out at third on a relay from first baseman Ryan Vilade to right fielder Jake Fraley to shortstop Taylor Walls to third baseman Caminero, ending the inning. In the fifth, Rafael Devers singled and Jung Hoo Lee singled, putting runners at first and third with one out, but Jerar Encarnacion grounded into a double play. In the seventh, Casey Schmitt singled with one out but was left stranded.
Tampa Bay’s bullpen finished the job. Ian Seymour pitched the seventh, allowing one hit. Cole Sulser worked a perfect eighth with one strikeout. Bryan Baker earned his eighth save of the season with a 1-2-3 ninth, striking out one.
For the Giants, Arraez had two hits, including a double. Casey Schmitt, Willy Adames, Rafael Devers, Patrick Bailey and Jung Hoo Lee each singled. The Giants grounded into two double plays and struck out seven times.
The Rays capitalized on two solo homers and an executed sacrifice fly, while their pitching staff held the Giants to just six singles and never allowed a runner to reach third base after the fifth inning.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Tampa Bay 7, San Francisco 6. Interstat’s ELO system gave Tampa Bay a 53.20 percent probability to win. The Rays were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5. The total score of 3 went over the over/under line of 7.5.
