Arizona Diamondbacks at Milwaukee Brewers
MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — The Arizona Diamondbacks and Milwaukee Brewers, both 15-13, meet Thursday afternoon/evening in the finale of a three-game series at American Family Field. The game will be played with the roof closed due to a forecast of 45-degree temperatures and rain.
Right-hander Brandon Woodruff (2-1) is the probable starter for Arizona. He will look to cool a Milwaukee lineup that scored 13 runs Tuesday in a 13-2 victory, then was limited to two runs in a 4-2 defeat Wednesday.
The Brewers have not announced a starting pitcher. Right-hander Chad Patrick, designated a player to watch, could be an option. Patrick threw 5 innings of one-hit ball with five strikeouts in Monday’s 13-2 win over Arizona, allowing two earned runs.
Arizona catcher James McCann is another player to watch. McCann has been used as a two-way player this season, making pitching appearances alongside his catching duties. In Tuesday’s loss, he pitched a scoreless inning and also drove in two runs at the plate. Over his last 10 games, McCann is hitting .250 with five RBI and has allowed no earned runs in three relief appearances covering 3 innings.
The Diamondbacks enter having split the series so far. They won the opener 4-2 on Wednesday behind a strong bullpen effort from Taylor Clarke, Ryan Thompson and others. Arizona dropped the first game 13-2 on Tuesday, but rebounded with improved pitching.
Milwaukee has been inconsistent recently. After the 13-2 rout, the Brewers were held to two runs. Before this series, Milwaukee took two of three from Pittsburgh, but lost five of seven prior to that.
The Interstat game simulator projects a 5-4 Arizona victory, though the Interstat ELO system gives Milwaukee a 59.4% win probability. Arizona opened as a -1.5 run favorite, with an over/under of 7.5 runs.
This is a critical early-season matchup between two teams tied in the standings. The Diamondbacks will head to Chicago to face the Cubs on Friday for a three-game road series. The Brewers travel to Washington for a three-game set against the Nationals beginning Friday.
With Woodruff on the mound and McCann providing versatility, Arizona hopes to build on Wednesday’s win. Milwaukee counters with a lineup that has shown both explosive power and sudden droughts. A series win would give either club momentum heading into a challenging May schedule.
