Brewers Pound Diamondbacks 13‑1 at American Family Field

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — William Contreras went 4 for 4 with a home run and four RBIs, and the Milwaukee Brewers routed the Arizona Diamondbacks 13-1 on Thursday afternoon at American Family Field.

Contreras singled in the first, homered in the third, singled again in the fourth and added another single in the eighth as the Brewers pounded out 14 hits and won in a laugher before 26,849 fans. The game lasted 2 hours, 50 minutes.

The Brewers jumped on Diamondbacks starter Michael Soroka from the start. Garrett Mitchell walked to lead off the bottom of the first, and after Brice Turang flied out, Contreras doubled to left-center, scoring Mitchell. After Jake Bauers walked, Tyler Black flied out, but Luis Rengifo doubled to the gap in left-center, plating Contreras and Bauers to make it 3-0.

Arizona got its only run in the fourth. Corbin Carroll led off with a double to right, and after Adrian Del Castillo struck out on a foul tip, Ildemaro Vargas singled to left, moving Carroll to third. Lourdes Gurriel Jr. then singled to center, scoring Carroll. But the rally stalled when Nolan Arenado grounded out and Alek Thomas struck out looking.

By that point, Milwaukee had already built a commanding lead. In the third, Brice Turang singled to center, and Contreras followed with a two-run homer to center, his third of the season. Bauers then singled, and Tyler Black singled to put runners at the corners. Rengifo grounded out to short, scoring Bauers for a 6-0 lead. Sal Frelick and Greg Jones were retired to end the inning.

The Brewers added two more in the fourth. David Hamilton singled to right, Garrett Mitchell singled on a grounder deflected by Soroka, and Turang lined a single to right, scoring Hamilton. Contreras then lined a single to left, scoring Mitchell, making it 8-1. Bauers flied out and Black grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Milwaukee put the game away with three runs in the sixth. David Hamilton grounded out, Mitchell singled, and Turang walked. Contreras also walked to load the bases. Bauers grounded out to first, scoring Mitchell. Turang moved to third and Contreras to second. Tyler Black then doubled to right, scoring both runners for an 11-1 lead. Rengifo struck out to end the inning.

Sal Frelick led off the seventh with a solo homer to right, his third of the year. Greg Jones struck out, David Hamilton lined out, and Mitchell struck out to end the frame. The Brewers added another run in the eighth on a bases-loaded walk to Tyler Black that forced in Brice Turang, making it 13-1.

Arizona’s offense managed six hits total. Gurriel had two hits and an RBI. Carroll doubled and scored. The Diamondbacks left seven runners on base and struck out 12 times.

Shane Drohan earned the win, improving to 1-1. He pitched four innings, allowing one earned run on five hits while striking out four. Five Brewers relievers combined for five shutout innings, allowing just one hit and striking out nine. Brandon Woodruff tossed 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball with two strikeouts. Jake Woodford worked a perfect eighth with two strikeouts. Grant Anderson struck out two in two-thirds of an inning. Trevor Megill struck out one in a scoreless seventh. Brian Fitzpatrick struck out two in a perfect ninth.

Soroka took the loss, falling to 4-1. He allowed six runs on seven hits over three innings, walking two and striking out one. Soroka had entered the game with a 1.80 ERA. The right-hander was tagged for a double, a two-run homer, and a run-scoring groundout during a three-run third that broke the game open. He faced 18 batters and threw 72 pitches.

The Brewers pounced early and never let up. Contreras’s 4-for-4 performance was the centerpiece of a balanced attack. He drove in four runs, scored three times, and also walked. Rengifo drove in three runs despite going 1 for 5 with a double. Black went 2 for 4 with three RBIs and a double. Frelick homered. Turang scored three times, and Mitchell scored twice and had two hits.

Defensively, the Brewers turned three double plays, including a rally-killing 4-6-3 twin killing in the fourth that ended a potential Arizona comeback threat. The Diamondbacks also turned one double play, but their pitching could not contain Milwaukee’s lineup.

The victory evened Milwaukee’s record at 16-14, matching Arizona’s mark. The Diamondbacks had beaten the Brewers 6-2 the previous afternoon but were blown out 13-2 on Tuesday. Arizona now heads to Chicago for a three-game series against the Cubs beginning Friday. Milwaukee travels to Washington for a three-game set against the Nationals starting Friday.

Contreras’s hot day came after an 0-for-4 performance Wednesday against the same Diamondbacks. In the previous two games, he had gone 2 for 4 with two RBIs in a 13-2 win on Tuesday and then 0 for 5 in a 6-2 loss on Monday. The Brewers catcher entered Thursday hitting .262.

Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Arizona 5, Milwaukee 4. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 59.40 percent probability to win. Arizona was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total score of 14 went under the over/under line of 7.5.
