Houston Astros at Baltimore Orioles

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — The Houston Astros and Baltimore Orioles will play a split doubleheader Thursday at Oriole Park at Camden Yards, with the first game scheduled for the afternoon and the second set for the evening. The weather forecast calls for rain and a game-time temperature of 61 degrees.

Houston (11-19) will send right-hander Lance McCullers Jr. (1-2) to the mound in the opener. Right-hander Brandon Young (2-0) is slated to start the nightcap for the Astros, who have lost five of their past six games. Baltimore (14-15) had not named a starter for either game as of late Wednesday.

The twin bill comes after Wednesday’s series finale was postponed or remained scoreless — records show a 0-0 result. The Orioles won the series opener Tuesday 5-3, with Shane Baz earning the victory. Baz pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowing one earned run on six hits with six strikeouts. Pete Alonso homered and drove in two runs for Baltimore.

Houston’s Brice Matthews was a bright spot in that loss, going 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs. Matthews has hit in two of his past three games and is coming off a 3-for-4 performance Tuesday. Over his past 10 games, the outfielder is batting .238 (5-for-21) with one homer and four RBIs.

Baz (1-3, 4.08 ERA) has been Baltimore’s most consistent starter of late. In his past two outings, he has allowed one earned run over 11 1/3 innings, striking out 12. He will be a player to watch regardless of which game he starts.

Baltimore has won four of its past six games after dropping two of three to Boston over the weekend. Houston has lost five of its past six, with the lone win coming April 22 at Cleveland, 2-0.

Interstat’s game simulator projects a 4-3 Orioles victory for one of the games.

Following the doubleheader, Houston travels to Boston for a three-game series starting Friday. Baltimore heads to New York for a four-game set against the Yankees.
