Jeremiah Jackson’s two homers, five RBIs lead Orioles past Astros
BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Jeremiah Jackson hit a grand slam and drove in five runs, Adley Rutschman added a grand slam of his own, and the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Houston Astros 10-3 on Thursday afternoon at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.
The Orioles improved to 15-15, while the Astros dropped to 11-20. Chris Bassitt earned the win, pitching 6⅔ innings while allowing seven hits and one earned run with seven strikeouts. Peter Lambert took the loss, lasting 4⅓ innings and giving up two earned runs on two hits with three strikeouts.
Baltimore broke open a tight game in the fifth inning, scoring four runs to take a 5-0 lead. After Blaze Alexander doubled and Gunnar Henderson singled, Taylor Ward walked to load the bases. Rutschman then launched a grand slam to left center field, his fourth home run of the season, clearing the bases and putting the Orioles ahead 5-0.
Houston responded in the seventh inning. With one out, Brice Matthews bunted for a single, Dustin Harris singled, and Christian Vázquez singled to drive in Matthews, cutting the deficit to 5-1. But Bassitt induced a force out from Carlos Correa to end the inning and limit the damage.
The Orioles answered emphatically in the bottom of the seventh. After two quick outs, Taylor Ward walked, Rutschman singled, and Pete Alonso walked to load the bases. Dylan Beavers then walked to force in Ward, making it 6-1. Jackson followed with a grand slam to left center, his sixth home run, extending the lead to 10-1.
Houston added two runs in the eighth inning. Isaac Paredes singled, advanced to second on a throwing error by third baseman Coby Mayo, and scored on a single by Yainer Diaz. Jose Altuve then scored on a single by Brice Matthews, making the score 10-3. But Baltimore’s bullpen held, with Rico Garcia, Jose Espada, and Anthony Nunez combining for three innings of scoreless relief, allowing two hits.
Jackson finished 2 for 4 with a home run and five RBIs, continuing a hot streak after going 1 for 3 in Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Astros. Rutschman was 2 for 4 with a grand slam and four RBIs. For Houston, Vázquez had two hits and an RBI, and Paredes collected three hits.
The game featured a strange statistical line: Houston outhit Baltimore 12-6 but managed only three runs. The Astros left seven runners on base and struck out seven times. Baltimore drew six walks, including three in the pivotal seventh inning.
