Marlins top Dodgers 3‑2 behind homers from Hicks, Ruiz
LOS ANGELES (Interstat) — The Miami Marlins defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 3-2 on Wednesday afternoon at Dodger Stadium, snapping the Dodgers’ nine-game home winning streak in a tense contest decided by late-inning execution and a game-ending double play.
Sandy Alcantara delivered a solid start for Miami, allowing seven hits and two earned runs over six innings while striking out four. He matched zeros with Dodgers starter Tyler Glasnow through the first inning, then saw the Marlins strike first in the top of the second. Catcher Liam Hicks launched a solo home run to right field, his seventh of the season, giving Miami a 1-0 lead. The Dodgers answered in the bottom half. Max Muncy doubled off the right-field wall, deflected by center fielder Jakob Marsee, and scored on a two-out single by Alex Call, knotting the game at 1-1.
Alcantara settled in after that, retiring eight of the next nine batters he faced. The Marlins reclaimed the lead in the fifth. After Graham Pauley walked, Esteury Ruiz crushed a 1-0 pitch over the left-field wall for his first home run of the season, a solo shot that made it 2-1 Miami. Ruiz finished 2-for-4 with the homer and one RBI.
Glasnow, who struck out nine and allowed three hits and two earned runs in 5 2/3 innings, worked out of a jam in the sixth but left with the Dodgers trailing by one. The Los Angeles bullpen kept the deficit at a single run, and the Dodgers tied the game in the bottom of the sixth. Kyle Tucker doubled to lead off, moved to third on a groundout, and scored on Dalton Rushing’s line-drive single to right. The Dodgers then loaded the bases on a single by Hyeseong Kim and a force out, but Alcantara induced a groundout from Alex Freeland to end the threat.
The game remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth. Xavier Edwards led off with a single off Dodgers reliever Will Klein. After a groundout moved Edwards to second, Klein struck out Connor Norby for the second out. Pinch-hitter Javier Sanoja then looped a pop-up that fell just beyond second baseman Alex Freeland, scoring Edwards to put Miami ahead 3-2. Sanoja’s hit proved decisive.
Miami turned to its bullpen to protect the one-run lead. Andrew Nardi worked a perfect seventh inning, striking out one. John King handled the eighth, retiring the side in order with a strikeout of his own. Calvin Faucher entered in the ninth with a save opportunity. He walked leadoff batter Hyeseong Kim, then Alex Call walked to put runners at first and second. Alex Freeland sacrificed both runners into scoring position, and Faucher intentionally walked Shohei Ohtani to load the bases with one out. Freddie Freeman then hit a ground ball to second baseman Xavier Edwards, who stepped on second for one out and tagged Freeman for an unassisted double play to end the game. Faucher earned his first save of the season.
The game featured strong defensive play on both sides. The Dodgers grounded into two double plays, including the one that decided the game. Miami pitchers combined for 19 strikes, 40 balls, and 19 balls in play, while Los Angeles pitchers threw 12 strikes, 49 balls, and 12 balls in play. Attendance was 50,555, and the game lasted two hours and 42 minutes.
The win improved Miami’s record to 15-16, while the Dodgers fell to 20-11. Andrew Nardi, who pitched a scoreless seventh inning with one strikeout, was credited with the victory, moving to 2-1 on the season. Will Klein took the loss, falling to 1-2, after allowing one run on three hits in two innings of relief.
Key performances included Glasnow’s 5 2/3-inning effort in which he struck out nine, walked two, and allowed three hits. Alcantara matched him with six strong frames, scattering seven hits and two runs while striking out four. For Miami, Ruiz and Hicks each homered, accounting for two of the Marlins’ six hits. Edwards, Sanoja, and Otto Lopez also singled. For Los Angeles, Rushing had two hits, including the RBI single in the sixth, and Tucker doubled and scored a run. The Dodgers managed seven hits overall but left nine runners on base.
The three-game series concluded with Miami winning two of three after losing the opener Monday and bouncing back Tuesday. The Marlins travel home to open a four-game set against the Philadelphia Phillies on Friday. The Dodgers head to St. Louis for a weekend series against the Cardinals.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Los Angeles Dodgers 5, Miami Marlins 3. The Interstat ELO system gave the Dodgers a 70.70 percent probability to win. Los Angeles had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus 1.5 runs. The combined total of five runs went over the over-under line of eight.
