Brewers rout Diamondbacks 13‑2 behind Patrick’s strong start

MILWAUKEE (Interstat) — The Milwaukee Brewers erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning Tuesday night at American Family Field, turning a tight game into a 13-2 rout of the Arizona Diamondbacks and pulling even with them at 15-13 on the season.

The decisive inning began with the Brewers holding a 5-2 lead, built on a solo home run by Sal Frelick in the second, a two-run single by Joey Ortiz in the fourth, and a two-run single by Tyler Black in the fifth. Arizona had briefly tied the game at 3 in the top of the fifth on a two-run single by James McCann, but Milwaukee answered immediately in its half of the inning.

In the bottom of the sixth, the Brewers sent 13 batters to the plate and collected seven hits, including four singles, two doubles and a catcher-interference call. Frelick started the rally with a single to center, followed by a bunt single from David Hamilton and a bunt single from Ortiz to load the bases. Garrett Mitchell singled to left to score Frelick, making it 6-2. William Contreras then singled to left, scoring Hamilton and Ortiz to push the lead to 8-2. Brice Turang walked to load the bases again, and Tyler Black singled to center to drive in Mitchell for a 9-2 advantage. Jake Bauers followed with a sharp line-drive single to center that scored Contreras and Turang, extending the lead to 11-2. After Brandon Lockridge popped out, Frelick reached on catcher interference, loading the bases again. Hamilton then lined a ground-rule double down the left-field line, scoring Black and Bauers for a 13-2 lead. Ortiz struck out and Mitchell popped out to end the inning.

The eight-run outburst was the largest single-inning output for the Brewers this season and turned a competitive game into a blowout. Arizona’s pitching staff, which entered the game with a 4.27 team ERA, could not contain Milwaukee’s lineup after the fifth inning.

Brewers starter Chad Patrick earned his second win of the season, working five innings and allowing one hit — a two-run single by James McCann in the fifth — while striking out five. He walked three and threw 58 of his 97 pitches for strikes. Patrick improved to 2-1 after a rough outing April 22 at Detroit, where he allowed four earned runs in four innings. On Tuesday, he faced the minimum through four innings, retiring the first 11 batters before issuing a walk to Adrian Del Castillo to open the fifth. He then allowed a walk to Jose Fernandez and a walk to Nolan Arenado before McCann’s single.

Jake Woodford earned his first save of the season with three innings of relief, allowing two hits and striking out two. Woodford entered with a 6-0 lead in the sixth and retired the side in order in the seventh, eighth and ninth, needing 32 pitches. Shane Drohan pitched a scoreless ninth inning, striking out one.

Merrill Kelly took the loss for Arizona, falling to 1-2. He allowed five runs on seven hits and five walks in 4⅔ innings, striking out two. Kelly was pulled after 94 pitches with two outs in the fifth. The Diamondbacks bullpen, including Andrew Hoffmann, Ryan Thompson, Taylor Clarke and James McCann, allowed eight runs in the sixth. McCann, who also started the game as the designated hitter and catcher, pitched a scoreless eighth inning.

Milwaukee outhit Arizona 15-3. The Brewers’ Tyler Black led the offense, going 3-for-5 with three RBIs. He singled in the fifth to drive in two runs and singled in the sixth to add another. Frelick went 2-for-2 with a home run and a walk, scoring three times. David Hamilton was 2-for-5 with a double and two RBIs. William Contreras collected two hits and two RBIs. Joey Ortiz had two singles and two RBIs. Garrett Mitchell, Jake Bauers and Brice Turang each drove in runs.

Arizona’s only hits were a single by James McCann in the fifth, a single by Tim Tawa in the seventh and a single by Ildemaro Vargas in the eighth. The Diamondbacks struck out 11 times and drew six walks but left eight runners on base.

The game was played in 2 hours, 57 minutes before a crowd of 23,062.

Arizona opened the scoring in the bottom of the second? No, that was actually the Brewers. Frelick’s solo home run to right-center field in the second inning gave Milwaukee a 1-0 lead. It was his second homer of the season. The Diamondbacks tied the game in the fifth on McCann’s two-run single, but the Brewers answered immediately.

The win snapped a two-game losing streak for Milwaukee, which had lost 6-3 and 5-0 to Pittsburgh over the weekend. Arizona had won three of its previous four games, including a 12-7 victory over San Diego on Sunday.

Both teams now stand at 15-13, tied for second place in their respective divisions. The Diamondbacks are 1½ games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. The Brewers are 1½ games behind the Chicago Cubs in the National League Central.

The series continues Wednesday with Arizona sending right-hander Ryne Nelson against Milwaukee right-hander Freddy Peralta. Thursday’s finale will feature right-hander Brandon Pfaadt for Arizona and right-hander Bryse Wilson for Milwaukee.

Interstat’s game simulator projected Arizona would win 6-4, but the Brewers outscored that projection by nine runs. Interstat’s ELO system gave Milwaukee a 58.30 percent probability to win before the game. Arizona was installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5 runs. The total combined score of 15 runs went under the over-under line of 8.
