Romo homers twice as White Sox beat Angels 5‑2
CHICAGO (Interstat) — Drew Romo homered twice and drove in three runs, and Davis Martin pitched five-plus solid innings as the Chicago White Sox defeated the Los Angeles Angels 5-2 on Tuesday night at Guaranteed Rate Field.
Romo, a catcher, hit a two-run homer in the fourth inning and a solo shot in the sixth, providing the decisive margin for the White Sox, who improved to 13-17. The Angels fell to 12-19 with their sixth loss in seven games.
Martin, the winning pitcher, allowed one earned run on seven hits over 5 2/3 innings, striking out seven without a walk. He improved to 4-1. Seranthony Domínguez worked a scoreless ninth inning for his seventh save.
José Soriano took the loss for Los Angeles, surrendering three earned runs on six hits in five innings with six strikeouts and two walks. He dropped to 5-1.
The game began with both starting pitchers in control. Angels starter Soriano struck out the side in the bottom of the first after the White Sox had worked three walks in the inning but left the bases loaded. Martin, meanwhile, allowed a leadoff single to Zach Neto in the top of the first but then retired the next three batters on strikeouts, two of them looking.
The Angels broke through in the top of the second. Nolan Schanuel led off with a single, but Martin settled down and retired the next three hitters to strand him.
Chicago got on the board in the bottom of the second when Colson Montgomery led off with a solo home run to right field, his eighth of the season. The White Sox added a second run in the fourth after Sam Antonacci singled and Romo followed with a two-run homer to right, giving Chicago a 3-1 lead.
Los Angeles trimmed the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the fourth. Schanuel doubled and scored on a single by Jo Adell. But Martin escaped further damage by getting Josh Lowe to line out and Sebastián Rivero to ground out.
Romo struck again in the bottom of the sixth, leading off with a solo homer to center field off Angels reliever Brent Suter, extending the lead to 4-2. Romo finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and three RBIs.
The White Sox added an insurance run in the seventh. Andrew Benintendi singled, Munetaka Murakami singled, and Miguel Vargas walked to load the bases. After a strikeout, Austin Hays grounded into a forceout at home, but Sam Antonacci was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Murakami to make it 5-2.
Josh Lowe hit a solo home run in the eighth for the Angels, his fourth of the season, but it was not enough.
Angels reliever José Fermin pitched 1 2/3 scoreless innings, allowing no hits and striking out one. Sean Newcomb of the White Sox worked 1 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing one hit and striking out three.
The Angels had nine hits, as did the White Sox. Each team’s pitchers combined for 19 strikes and 42 balls for Los Angeles, and 24 strikes and 57 balls for Chicago.
The game lasted 2 hours, 47 minutes before an announced crowd of 11,857.
The White Sox won the previous night’s game 8-7 in a seesaw affair, and the two teams meet again Wednesday in the series finale before the Angels head home to host the New York Mets this weekend. Chicago travels to San Diego next.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Chicago White Sox 4, Los Angeles Angels 3, and Interstat’s ELO system gave the White Sox a 50.60 percent probability to win. The Angels had been installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5, but the total score of 7 went over the over-under line of 7.5.
