Tyler Glasnow, Dodgers shut out Giants on one-hitter
SAN FRANCISCO (Interstat) — Tyler Glasnow pitched eight innings of one-hit ball, combining with Tanner Scott on a shutout as the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants 3-0 on Thursday to avoid a three-game series sweep.
Glasnow (3-0) struck out nine, walked one and threw 105 pitches in a dominant performance at Oracle Park. The 32-year-old right-hander retired the final 14 batters he faced and allowed only a first-inning walk to Luis Arraez and a fourth-inning single to the same hitter. He has never thrown a complete game in the majors.
Tanner Scott worked a perfect ninth inning with one strikeout for his first save of the season.
The Dodgers scored one run in the second inning and two in the fourth, enough to back Glasnow’s brilliance. Los Angeles improved to 17-8, the best record in the National League West. The Giants fell to 11-14.
Logan Webb (2-3) took the loss, allowing three runs on seven hits over seven innings. He struck out five and walked two.
The game was played in 2 hours, 6 minutes before an announced crowd of 38,619.
Glasnow’s gem
Glasnow was in command from the start. He struck out three of the first four batters he faced, working around a two-out walk to Arraez in the first. After a fielding error by shortstop Hyeseong Kim put Heliot Ramos on base to open the second, Glasnow induced a double play from Jung Hoo Lee and struck out Will Brennan to end the inning.
The only hit off Glasnow came with one out in the fourth, when Arraez lined a single to center. Glasnow then got Matt Chapman to ground into a double play and struck out Rafael Devers to finish the inning. He did not allow another baserunner, striking out the side in the sixth and seventh innings.
Giants hitters grounded into two double plays, a key factor in stifling any potential rallies.
Dodgers break through
Los Angeles opened the scoring in the second inning. Max Muncy drew a one-out walk from Webb and advanced to second on a groundout. Dalton Rushing then lined a single to center, driving in Muncy for a 1-0 lead. Rushing was thrown out trying to stretch the hit into a double.
The Dodgers added two runs in the fourth. Kyle Tucker led off with a double to center and scored on a double by Muncy, who advanced to third on a throwing error by center fielder Drew Gilbert. After a groundout and a flyout, Hyeseong Kim singled to left, scoring Muncy to make it 3-0. Kim finished 2 for 4 with an RBI.
Kim also contributed defensively, turning a key double play in the second inning.
Series context
The victory ended a two-game losing streak for the Dodgers, who had dropped the first two games of the series by identical 3-0 scores. Los Angeles had lost four of its previous five games before Thursday.
The Giants had won three straight overall but were unable to complete the sweep. They managed only one hit in the game, the lowest offensive output of their season.
Key performances
Glasnow’s performance was his second consecutive strong start. On April 17 against Colorado, he allowed one run on two hits over seven innings in a 7-1 win.
Kyle Tucker went 2 for 4 with a double and a run scored. Max Muncy went 1 for 3 with a double, a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Dalton Rushing went 1 for 2 with a walk, a hit-by-pitch and an RBI.
For the Giants, Luis Arraez had the only hit, a single in the fourth. Blade Tidwell pitched two scoreless innings in relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
Shohei Ohtani went 0 for 5 with two strikeouts, his third consecutive game without a hit in the series.
Looking ahead
The Dodgers return home to face the Chicago Cubs in a three-game series starting Friday. The Giants host the Miami Marlins for a three-game set beginning Friday.
Los Angeles’ next 10 games include three against the Cubs, three against the Marlins, three at St. Louis and one at Houston. San Francisco’s next 10 include three against Miami, three at Philadelphia, three at Tampa Bay and one against San Diego at home.
Game summary
The Dodgers scored their three runs on eight hits and committed one error. The Giants had one hit and committed two errors.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 7-5 Dodgers win, and its ELO system gave Los Angeles a 62.5 percent probability of winning. The Dodgers were installed as a pregame favorite with a spread of minus-1.5. The total of three runs went over the over/under line of seven.
Key plays in the game included the double play turned by Kim in the second inning to erase the error, and the two-run fourth inning that put the Dodgers ahead by three. That inning featured Tucker’s leadoff double, Muncy’s run-scoring double and Kim’s RBI single, all with two outs.
Glasnow’s ability to retire the final 14 batters in order, including seven strikeouts over the final five innings, was the most important stretch of the game, preventing any Giants comeback.
The loss dropped the Giants to 1-3 against the Dodgers this season, with the teams not scheduled to meet again until July.
