Philadelphia Phillies at Chicago Cubs
PHILADELPHIA (Interstat) — The struggling Philadelphia Phillies will try to salvage the finale of a four-game series against the surging Chicago Cubs on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field.
The Phillies (8-15) have lost the first three games of the series and eight of their last nine overall. They will send left-hander Cristopher Sánchez (2-2) to the mound for the 1:20 p.m. CDT start under cloudy skies with a game-time temperature of 66 degrees.
Chicago (14-9) counters with left-hander Shota Imanaga, who has dominated Philadelphia already this season. In two starts against the Phillies, Imanaga is 2-0, allowing two earned runs over 13 innings with 12 strikeouts. He earned the win in Tuesday’s 7-4 victory, pitching seven strong innings.
Sánchez will face a Cubs lineup that has outscored the Phillies 27-11 in the series. Philadelphia’s offense has mustered just seven runs in the three losses.
A player to watch for the Phillies is Jesús Luzardo, though not as a pitcher. The left-hander, who took the loss Tuesday, is emblematic of the team’s pitching struggles. In his last start against Chicago, he allowed just one earned run, but the Phillies have lost each of his last four outings despite several solid performances.
For the Cubs, Imanaga has been a cornerstone. Since a rocky season opener, he has posted a 1.59 ERA over his last four starts, including the two wins over Philadelphia.
The Cubs have won five of six meetings with the Phillies this season. According to Interstat’s game simulator, that trend is projected to continue with a 7-2 Chicago victory.
Following the game, the Phillies travel to Atlanta for a three-game series, while the Cubs head west to open a set against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.
