CHICAGO (Interstat) — Dansby Swanson delivered his first walk-off hit since 2021, a one-out single in the 10th inning that gave the Chicago Cubs an 8-7 victory over the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday afternoon at Wrigley Field.

The win extended Chicago’s winning streak to nine games and dropped Philadelphia to its ninth consecutive defeat. The Cubs improved to 16-9, while the Phillies fell to 8-17.

Swanson’s opposite-field line drive to right-center off Tanner Banks scored automatic runner Ian Happ from third base, capping a game that featured five lead changes or ties after the seventh inning. The Cubs had blown leads of 6-2 and 7-6, and the Phillies had erased deficits twice, including a tying home run in the ninth.

Philadelphia struck first in the second inning when Brandon Marsh led off with a solo home run to right-center, his third of the season. The Cubs answered immediately in the bottom half. Carson Kelly doubled, moved to third on a Michael Busch single and scored on Swanson’s sacrifice fly. Chicago then loaded the bases but left them stranded when Alex Bregman popped out.

The Cubs broke the game open in the third. Seiya Suzuki singled, Carson Kelly singled, and Michael Busch crushed a three-run homer to center field, his second of the year, giving Chicago a 4-1 lead. Singles by Swanson and Matt Shaw followed, but a forceout and a groundout ended the inning.

The Phillies had a chance to take the lead in the top of the ninth after Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber walked, but Bryce Harper flied out, Dylan Moore popped out and Marsh struck out.

Chicago threatened in the bottom of the ninth. Moisés Ballesteros doubled and moved to third on a groundout, but José Alvarado intentionally walked Bregman and Happ flied out to end the inning.

Banks issued an intentional walk to Suzuki to start the Cubs’ 10th. Kelly singled to load the bases. Busch struck out, but Swanson lined a 1-0 pitch to right field, scoring Happ.
