Yankees sweep Red Sox with 4‑2 win behind Schlittler
BOSTON (Interstat) — Cam Schlittler limited the team he rooted for growing up to four hits over eight innings, and the New York Yankees rallied twice to beat the Boston Red Sox 4-2 on Thursday night for a three-game sweep and a season-high six-game winning streak.
With his family cheering on at Fenway Park, Schlittler (3-1) allowed two runs, one earned, while striking out five, walking one and lowering his ERA to 1.77. It was the longest outing in 20 regular-season starts for the 25-year-old right-hander from Weymouth, who pitched eight shutout innings to beat the Red Sox at Yankee Stadium in last year’s AL Wild Card Series.
The Yankees improved to 16-9, while the Red Sox dropped to 9-16. The attendance was 36,565, and the game lasted 2 hours, 28 minutes.
The decisive sequence came in the seventh inning. With the game tied 1-1, the Yankees sent nine men to the plate and scored three runs on four hits, taking a 4-2 lead they would not relinquish.
Trent Grisham led off the seventh with a single off Red Sox reliever Greg Weissert. Jazz Chisholm Jr. followed with a sharp single to center, sending Grisham to second. Jose Caballero singled to center, loading the bases with no outs. After Austin Wells struck out, Cody Bellinger delivered a two-run single to left, scoring Grisham and Chisholm. Aaron Judge then singled to right, scoring Caballero and advancing Bellinger to third. Judge moved to second on a fielding error by right fielder Wilyer Abreu.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora then ordered an intentional walk to Ben Rice, loading the bases again, but Giancarlo Stanton struck out to end the inning.
The Yankees had taken a 1-0 lead in the fifth when Chisholm homered to right field, his first of the season, off Red Sox starter Payton Tolle. Boston answered in the bottom of the fifth when catcher Carlos Narvaez homered to left-center, tying the game at 1-1.
The Red Sox had scored first in the second inning. With one out, Abreu walked and Trevor Story reached on a throwing error by third baseman Amed Rosario. Marcelo Mayer then doubled to center, scoring Story for a 1-0 lead.
Tolle was sharp in his six innings, allowing three hits and one earned run while striking out 11. He walked three. Weissert took the loss, falling to 0-1 after giving up two hits and two runs in one-third of an inning.
David Bednar earned his seventh save of the season with a perfect ninth inning, striking out one.
Schlittler was masterful from the start. He retired the side in order in the first inning and worked around a walk and an error in the second. He scattered four hits and did not issue a walk after the second inning. He struck out the side in the eighth, fanning Caleb Durbin, Narvaez and Jarren Duran to end his outing.
The Yankees’ offense collected 10 hits, led by Chisholm, who went 2 for 4 with a home run and an RBI. Bellinger, who entered as a pinch hitter in the seventh, was 1 for 2 with two RBIs. Judge went 1 for 4 with a walk and an RBI. Caballero had two hits, including a double.
For the Red Sox, Mayer was 1 for 3 with an RBI double. Narvaez had the solo home run. Boston managed only four hits total.
The sweep continued a dominant stretch for the Yankees, who have won six straight and eight of their last nine. They outscored the Red Sox 12-3 in the three-game series, which included shutouts of 4-0 and 4-1 victories Tuesday and Wednesday.
New York’s previous results this season have shown resilience. After dropping two of three to Tampa Bay in mid-April, the Yankees swept Kansas City at home, then came to Boston and swept the Red Sox. Their recent hot streak has moved them into first place in the American League East.
The Red Sox, meanwhile, have lost five straight and seven of their last nine. They have struggled particularly at home, where they are 4-10 this season.
Looking ahead, the Yankees travel to Houston for a three-game series beginning Friday against the Astros. They will then visit Texas for three games before returning home to face Baltimore. The Red Sox, after dropping to last place in the division, head to Baltimore for three games, then to Toronto for three, before returning home to host Houston.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 6-5 Yankees victory, while the pregame betting line favored New York by 1.5 runs. The total of six runs went under the over-under line of 8.5.
Key performances in the game included Tolle’s 11-strikeout effort for Boston, though he took a no-decision. Schlittler’s eight-inning gem was the top star for the Yankees. Bednar’s clean ninth preserved the win. For the Red Sox, relievers Tyler Samaniego and Ryan Watson combined for two scoreless innings, but the damage was done against Weissert.
The Yankees’ win also marked the first time this season they have swept a three-game series. Their previous sweep came last September against the Athletics. For Schlittler, the outing was his longest since last October’s playoff start, and it continued a strong April in which he has allowed two earned runs or fewer in three of his four starts.
The Red Sox’s offensive struggles were compounded by defensive miscues. Abreu’s error in the seventh allowed an extra run to score, and the team’s inability to get hits with runners in scoring position continued: Boston went 1 for 7 with runners in scoring position and left five men on base.
The Yankees, by contrast, went 3 for 11 with runners in scoring position and left 10 men on base. Their 10 hits were spread across seven different players.
The game featured 22 combined hits, with the Yankees accounting for 10 and the Red Sox four. Yankees pitchers combined for 22 strikes, 51 balls and 22 balls in play. Red Sox pitchers combined for nine strikes, 28 balls and nine balls in play.
The victory improved Schlittler’s career record against the Red Sox to 3-0 with a 1.13 ERA over 24 innings, including the postseason.
The Yankees will send right-hander Marcus Stroman to the mound Friday against Houston’s Framber Valdez. The Red Sox will counter with left-hander Garrett Crochet against Baltimore’s Grayson Rodriguez.
Notes: The Yankees placed left fielder Randal Grichuk on the paternity list after the game, and recalled outfielder Everson Pereira from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Grichuk went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts Thursday. ... Red Sox first baseman Willson Contreras went 0 for 4 with two strikeouts. ... The three-game sweep was the first for the Yankees at Fenway Park since August 2023.
