Ramírez, Hicks Power Marlins Past Braves
ATLANTA (Interstat) — Agustín Ramírez launched a tie-breaking three-run homer and the Miami Marlins erupted for 16 hits to snap a three-game losing streak with a 10-4 victory over the Atlanta Braves on Monday night at Truist Park.
The Marlins, who had scored just three total runs in their previous three games, broke out in a big way, scoring in four consecutive innings to pull away from the Braves. The win improved Miami to 9-8 on the season, while Atlanta fell to 10-7.
For three innings, the game was a pitchers’ duel between Miami’s Eury Pérez and Atlanta’s Grant Holmes. Pérez worked around a two-on, one-out jam in the third by inducing an inning-ending double play from Ronald Acuña Jr. Holmes, meanwhile, retired the first nine Marlins he faced.
The offensive floodgates opened for both teams in the fourth. Miami struck first, plating three runs on a sacrifice fly by Liam Hicks and RBI singles from Otto Lopez and Connor Norby. The Braves answered immediately in the bottom half, tying the game at 3-3 with a three-run rally of their own. Austin Riley, Mike Yastrzemski and Dominic Smith each drove in a run with hits off Pérez.
The deadlock was short-lived. In the top of the fifth, with Graham Pauley and Xavier Edwards on base, Ramírez stepped in against Braves reliever Aaron Bummer. On a 1-1 count, Ramírez crushed a 418-foot drive to left-center field for a three-run homer, putting Miami ahead for good at 6-3. The blast was the most important play of the game, shifting momentum permanently to the Marlins and igniting their lineup.
Ramírez, who had been in a 1-for-12 slump over his previous three games, finished 3 for 4 with four RBIs and two runs scored. His performance headlined a relentless Miami attack.
The Marlins continued to add on. Norby led off the sixth inning with a solo home off José Suarez to make it 7-4. Later in the frame, Ramírez added an RBI single and Hicks followed with a run-scoring hit of his own to extend the lead to 9-4. Hicks capped his 3-for-4, three-RBI night with another RBI single in the eighth to produce the final margin.
While the offense piled up runs, Miami’s bullpen silenced the Braves’ bats after the fourth inning. Andrew Nardi (1-0) earned the win with a scoreless fifth inning in relief of Pérez, who allowed four runs — three earned — and seven hits over four innings. The relief corps of Lake Bachar, Anthony Bender, Calvin Faucher and John King combined for five scoreless innings to close it out, allowing just two hits and striking out seven.
Bachar was particularly dominant, striking out four over two perfect frames. Bender and Faucher each worked scoreless innings, and King recorded the final out of the eighth.
Atlanta’s Bummer (0-1) took the loss, surrendering Ramírez’s decisive homer in the fifth. The Braves managed nine hits but went 3 for 12 with runners in scoring position and left nine men on base. Riley had two hits and an RBI for Atlanta.
The game, played in front of 22,912 fans, lasted 2 hours and 58 minutes. The combined 14 runs sailed over the pregame over/under line of 8.5, defying the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 6-4 Braves victory. Atlanta had entered as a solid favorite with a 58.7% win probability according to the ELO system.
The Marlins will look to build on the win in the second game of the series on Tuesday night in Sandy Springs. Atlanta will aim to even the series.
