Giants Ride Roupp’s Arm, Timely Hitting to Series-Opening Win Over Orioles

BALTIMORE (Interstat) — Landen Roupp delivered six strong innings and the San Francisco Giants’ offense broke through in the middle innings to secure a 6-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday night at Oriole Park at Camden Yards.

A crowd of 32,294 watched the Giants, defying pregame projections that favored the Orioles, improve to 6-8 on the season. Baltimore fell to 6-7.

The most important part of the game was Roupp’s commanding performance on the mound, which steadied the Giants after a rocky start to his season. Coming off a loss where he allowed six earned runs to the New York Mets just six days prior, Roupp silenced a potent Orioles lineup. He scattered five hits and allowed just one earned run while striking out four, effectively neutralizing Baltimore’s opportunities and providing a foundation for the win.

San Francisco’s offense, which mustered 12 hits, was held in check early by Orioles starter Shane Baz. The Giants finally broke through in the third inning when shortstop Willy Adames launched a solo home run, his second of the year, to right-center field for the game’s first run.

They extended their lead in the fourth. Casey Schmitt led off with a double, advanced to third on a groundout, and scored on Heliot Ramos’ line-drive single to right. After a Patrick Bailey single, Adames struck again, driving a double to left field to score Ramos and push the lead to 3-0.

Baltimore answered in the bottom half of the fourth against Roupp. Dylan Beavers walked and scored on a double by Leody Taveras, cutting the deficit to 3-1. Roupp, however, limited the damage, stranding Taveras at second to preserve the two-run lead.

The game’s decisive blow came in the seventh inning, turning a close contest into a comfortable lead for the visitors. With one out, Matt Chapman walked. After a flyout, Schmitt laced his third double of the game to left, scoring Chapman. Jung Hoo Lee followed by crushing a two-run homer to right field, his first of the season, to give San Francisco a commanding 6-1 advantage.

Baz (0-1) took the loss for Baltimore, lasting five innings and surrendering three earned runs on nine hits. The Giants’ bullpen combination of Matt Gage, JT Brubaker, and others navigated through the eighth inning without issue, maintaining the five-run cushion.

The Orioles mounted a final threat in the ninth against Giants reliever Blade Tidwell. With one out, Jeremiah Jackson singled. After a strikeout, Gunnar Henderson hit a two-run homer to right, his fifth of the season, to make it 6-3. Taylor Ward followed with a double, bringing the tying run to the plate. But Adley Rutschman popped out to Adames at shortstop to end the game, sealing the victory for San Francisco.

Roupp (2-1) earned the win with his quality start. Adames finished 2-for-5 with a home run, a double, and two RBIs, while Lee’s two-run homer was a key highlight. Schmitt had a standout night, going 3-for-5 with three doubles, an RBI, and two runs scored. For Baltimore, Henderson’s late homer provided the only significant power, and Rutschman collected two doubles in a 3-for-5 effort.

Albert Suárez provided two scoreless innings of relief for the Orioles, and Yennier Cano added a perfect eighth.

The Giants’ victory marked their third straight win following a series sweep of the Philadelphia Phillies earlier in the week. The Orioles saw a three-game winning streak snapped.

The two teams continue their three-game series on Saturday.
