Orioles Top White Sox to Complete Road Sweep

CHICAGO (Interstat) — Taylor Ward’s fourth hit of the afternoon drove in the decisive run in the ninth inning, and the Baltimore Orioles’ bullpen delivered four scoreless frames to secure a 5-3 victory over the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday at Guaranteed Rate Field.

The win completed a three-game sweep for the Orioles, who evened their season record at 6-6. The White Sox fell to 4-8 with their fifth consecutive loss.

The most important part of the game unfolded in the top of the ninth inning of a 3-3 contest. Facing White Sox reliever Lucas Sims, Gunnar Henderson ignited the rally with a one-out double. Ward, who had already driven in a run earlier, then laced a sharp line drive to center field for his third double of the game, scoring Henderson easily to break the tie. Ward finished 4 for 5 with two doubles and two RBIs, continuing a torrid stretch at the plate.

Baltimore’s bullpen quartet of Tyler Wells, Grant Wolfram, Anthony Nunez and Rico Garcia was flawless, allowing just one hit and one walk over the final four innings while striking out five. Garcia worked a tense ninth for his first save of the season, issuing a two-out walk before inducing a game-ending groundout from Colson Montgomery with the potential tying runs on base.

The game was a tight affair throughout, featuring seven combined runs in the middle innings. Chicago struck first in the second against Orioles starter Kyle Bradish. Andrew Benintendi led off with a triple and scored on Dustin Harris’s single. Harris later came home on a Luisangel Acuña single, giving the White Sox an early 2-0 lead.

Baltimore answered in the third against Chicago starter Sean Burke. Henderson walked and scored on Ward’s first double. Ward then came home on a groundout by Adley Rutschman, tying the game.

The White Sox reclaimed a 3-2 edge in the fifth without the benefit of a hit. Bradish walked Chase Meidroth and Munetaka Murakami, and after a flyout, he walked Montgomery to force in a run. A missed catch error and throwing error by Bradish on the play allowed a second run to score, though only one was earned.

The Orioles responded immediately in the sixth, chasing Burke. Pete Alonso doubled and scored the tying run on a sacrifice fly by Dylan Beavers. Tyler O’Neill, who had singled, later scored on a fielder’s choice to put Baltimore ahead 4-3.

Bradish (1-2) earned the win despite a laboring performance. He went five innings, allowing three runs, two earned, on six hits. He walked three and struck out seven. Burke was effective for Chicago, yielding two runs on just two hits over five innings with three strikeouts, but did not factor in the decision.

Sims (0-1) took the loss after surrendering Ward’s go-ahead double in the ninth.

Both teams finished with seven hits. The Orioles’ ability to capitalize with runners in scoring position and a lockdown effort from their relievers proved the difference. Baltimore’s bullpen stranded multiple White Sox runners, including in the seventh when Wells induced an inning-ending double play after Chicago had put two men on with one out.

The announced attendance was 10,133 for the afternoon contest, which took 3 hours and 1 minute to complete.

Baltimore now returns home to open a series against the San Francisco Giants on Friday. The White Sox, mired in a skid, travel to Kansas City to begin a four-game set with the Royals on Thursday.
