Cardinals Edge Nationals in 10 Innings After Late Rally

WASHINGTON (Interstat) — The St. Louis Cardinals outlasted the Washington Nationals 7-6 in 10 innings on Tuesday night at Nationals Park, avenging a loss from the previous day.

St. Louis scored twice in the 10th on RBI doubles by Thomas Saggese and JJ Wetherholt to secure the win before a crowd of 20,036. Washington plated a run in the bottom half but fell short.

The Cardinals built an early lead, but the Nationals chipped away, tying the game at 5 in the sixth on Curtis Mead’s RBI single. Nathan Church’s two-run homer in the eighth had briefly put St. Louis back ahead before Washington forced extras.

Winning pitcher George Soriano tossed two perfect innings of relief for the Cardinals. Riley O’Brien earned his third save. Nationals starter Cade Cavalli allowed one earned run over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision. The loss went to Cole Henry.

St. Louis improved to 6-5. Washington dropped to 4-7.
