Dodgers Unleash Offensive Onslaught to Rout Blue Jays

TORONTO (Interstat) — The Los Angeles Dodgers’ offense, already one of the most formidable in baseball, delivered a record-setting performance Monday night at Rogers Centre. They pounded out 17 hits, including four home runs, and routed the Toronto Blue Jays 14-2 in the opener of a three-game series.

Catcher Dalton Rushing led the onslaught with a perfect 4-for-4 night that included two home runs, pacing a relentless Dodgers attack that scored in seven of nine innings before a crowd of 40,991.

The most important sequence of the game came early, setting a dominant tone from which the Blue Jays never recovered. Facing future Hall of Famer Max Scherzer, the Dodgers struck quickly in the first inning. After two quick outs, Kyle Tucker worked a walk. Teoscar Hernández, a former Blue Jay, then launched Scherzer’s pitch over the left-field wall for a two-run homer, silencing the home crowd and giving Los Angeles a lead it would only expand.

The Dodgers’ early assault continued in the third inning against reliever Josh Fleming. Shohei Ohtani led off with an infield single and advanced to second on a throwing error. After a groundout moved him to third, Freddie Freeman blasted a two-run homer to right-center field, extending the lead to 4-1 and effectively putting the game out of reach given the Dodgers’ pitching advantage.

Los Angeles starter Justin Wrobleski earned the win in his season debut, providing five strong innings. The left-hander allowed one run on two hits, walking two and striking out two. His performance stabilized the game after the Dodgers’ early outburst, handing a comfortable lead to the bullpen.

The Dodgers’ lineup, however, was the story. They added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game wide open with a three-run sixth. Ohtani led off that frame with a solo homer to center, his third of the year. Later, with two on and two out, Andy Pages delivered a two-run double to right field, pushing the advantage to 9-1.

The seventh inning brought more punishment. Rushing led off with his first homer of the night. Later, Freeman laced a two-run double and Hernández followed with a two-run single, completing a four-run inning that made it 13-1. Rushing capped his spectacular night with a solo shot in the eighth, his third home run of the young season.

Rushing, who also homered in Sunday’s win at Washington, is now 5 for 7 with three homers in his last two games. Freeman finished 2 for 4 with a homer, a double and three RBIs. Hernández drove in four runs on his first-inning blast and seventh-inning single. Ohtani went 2 for 6 with a homer.

The Dodgers’ bullpen combo of Will Klein and Edgardo Henriquez preserved the lead with three scoreless innings of relief before Toronto scratched across a final run in the ninth on a groundout.

For Toronto, the loss was a continuation of early-season struggles. Scherzer took the loss, dropping to 1-1 after surrendering two runs on two hits in just two innings of work. The Blue Jays managed only five hits total, with Kazuma Okamoto collecting two singles. Their only runs came on an Ernie Clement RBI single in the first and a late groundout in the ninth.

The result defied the pregame projection from Interstat, which had forecast an 8-4 Dodgers victory. The combined 16 runs easily surpassed the over/under line of 8.5.

With the win, the Dodgers improved to a major league-best 8-2, continuing their strong start to the season. They have now won four straight games and seven of their last eight. The Blue Jays fell to 4-6, having lost four of their last five contests.

The two teams are scheduled to meet again Tuesday night at Rogers Centre for the second game of the series.
