Angels Edge Mariners in 11-Inning Thriller
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Interstat) — In a back-and-forth contest that required extra innings to decide, the Los Angeles Angels edged the Seattle Mariners 8-7 in 11 innings Sunday afternoon at Angel Stadium, securing a series split in their four-game set.
The decisive run crossed the plate in the bottom of the 11th on a sacrifice fly by Nolan Schanuel, scoring Adam Frazier and capping a game defined by resilient comebacks from both sides. The Angels, who never led until the final play, twice erased deficits in the late innings to force extras and ultimately walk off winners before a crowd of 27,712.
Seattle built an early lead, plating two runs in the second inning on a two-run single by Leo Rivas. The Angels chipped away, however, with single runs in the first and third innings on RBI singles by Jorge Soler, and two more in the fourth. The fourth-inning rally was aided by a costly error on Seattle third baseman Rivas, which allowed one run to score, followed by an RBI single from Schanuel.
The Mariners responded forcefully in the fifth. After two quick outs, Randy Arozarena was hit by a pitch and J.P. Crawford walked, bringing rookie Cole Young to the plate. Young connected on a three-run homer off reliever Ryan Zeferjahn, his second of the season, to reclaim the lead for Seattle at 6-4.
Los Angeles answered immediately in the bottom half of the frame. Jeimer Candelario doubled and scored on a single by Jo Adell. After a sacrifice bunt moved Adell to second, Adam Frazier delivered a clutch two-out single to tie the game at 6.
From there, both bullpens locked down the offense. Seattle relievers Casey Legumina, Cole Wilcox, Andrés Muñoz and Matt Brash combined for 5 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and striking out five. For the Angels, Brent Suter, Sam Bachman and Shaun Anderson were equally effective, limiting Seattle to one run over the sixth through tenth innings.
The Mariners broke the deadlock in the top of the ninth. Cal Raleigh doubled with two outs and scored on a sharp single by Julio Rodríguez, giving Seattle a 7-6 lead.
Needing a run to extend the game, the Angels executed small ball perfectly in the bottom of the tenth. Pinch-runner Jo Adell was placed on second to start the inning. Bryce Teodosio’s sacrifice bunt moved him to third, and Logan O’Hoppe followed with a sacrifice fly to center, tying the game at 7.
Seattle threatened in the top of the 11th, loading the bases with two outs on a walk and a hit-by-pitch, but Angels closer Shaun Anderson struck out Cal Raleigh to end the inning.
In the bottom of the 11th, Frazier began the inning as the automatic runner at second base. After an intentional walk to Zach Neto, Oswald Peraza’s sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position. Seattle brought the infield in, but Schanuel lifted a fly ball to medium-depth left field. Arozarena’s throw was not in time, as Frazier slid home safely to end the 3-hour, 37-minute marathon.
The winning pitcher was Anderson, who worked two scoreless innings of relief to move to 1-0. Seattle’s Gabe Speier, who intentionally walked Neto before the sacrifice sequence in the 11th, took the loss, falling to 0-2.
Offensively, the Angels out-hit the Mariners 11 to 7. Frazier led the way for Los Angeles, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, and two RBIs. For Seattle, Young’s three-run homer was the key blow, accounting for nearly half of the team’s runs.
The most critical sequence of the game unfolded in the bottom of the tenth inning. Facing elimination, the Angels executed two fundamental sacrifice plays—a bunt and a fly ball—under pressure to manufacture the tying run without the benefit of a hit, forcing an 11th inning and setting the stage for their eventual victory.
With the win, the Angels even their season record at 5-5. The Mariners, who have lost four of their last five, fall to 4-6.
Seattle travels to Texas to open a three-game series with the Rangers on Monday. The Angels will remain at home to begin a three-game set against the Atlanta Braves, also on Monday.
