Tigers Outslug Cardinals in Rain-Shortened Affair
DETROIT (Interstat) — The Detroit Tigers hit four home runs, including a two-run homer from Matt Vierling in the eighth inning, to power past the St. Louis Cardinals 11-6 on Saturday afternoon in a game called after 8 1/2 innings due to rain.
The Tigers built an early lead before the Cardinals’ Jordan Walker hit a grand slam in the fifth to briefly put St. Louis ahead 6-5. Detroit responded immediately, reclaiming the lead for good in the bottom of the frame. Kerry Carpenter, Zach McKinstry and Gleyber Torres also homered for Detroit, which recorded 12 hits.
Brant Hurter earned the win in relief for the Tigers. Dustin May took the loss for St. Louis. The game was delayed 40 minutes before being called with one out in the top of the ninth. The victory evened both teams’ records at 4-4.
