Royals Outslug Twins in High-Scoring Affair at Kauffman

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (Interstat) — A seven-run sixth inning, capped by Jonathan India’s grand slam, propelled the Kansas City Royals to a 13-9 victory over the Minnesota Twins in a high-scoring, back-and-forth affair Wednesday night at Kauffman Stadium.

The win improved the Royals to 3-2 on the young season, while the Twins fell to 1-4, their third straight loss.

The game’s decisive moment arrived in the bottom of the sixth with Kansas City clinging to a 5-1 lead. The Twins’ bullpen unraveled completely, allowing the Royals to send 12 men to the plate. The inning began with a hit-by-pitch to Jac Caglianone and a walk to Isaac Collins. Kyle Isbel’s single loaded the bases before Maikel Garcia worked a walk to force in a run. Bobby Witt Jr.’s sacrifice fly made it 7-1, and a fielding error by Twins first baseman Victor Caratini on a Vinnie Pasquantino fielder’s choice brought home another.

After a walk to Salvador Perez re-loaded the bases, India stepped in against reliever Anthony Banda. On a 1-1 count, India launched a towering drive to left field for a grand slam, his first home run of the season, breaking the game open at 12-1. The blast was the centerpiece of India’s five-RBI night.

The Royals’ offensive outburst made a winner of starter Noah Cameron, who delivered a strong five-inning performance. Cameron allowed one earned run on four hits, striking out five without issuing a walk. He effectively quieted a Twins lineup that had struggled to find consistency early this season.

Kansas City built its initial lead with a three-run second inning off Twins starter Joe Ryan, who took the loss. Consecutive doubles by Caglianone and Collins produced the first run, followed by RBI singles from Isbel and Garcia. They added single runs in the third on an RBI single from India and in the fourth on a sacrifice fly from Garcia.

The Twins, held to just one run through six innings on an RBI single by Brooks Lee in the fifth, mounted a persistent but ultimately insufficient comeback against the Royals’ bullpen.

Minnesota pushed across three runs in the seventh, keyed by a two-run double from Luke Keaschall. They added two more in the eighth on an RBI single from Caratini and a hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded. In the ninth, facing closer Lucas Erceg, Josh Bell launched a three-run homer to deep left field, his first of the year, to close the gap to the final margin. Erceg recovered to record the final two outs, securing his second save of the season.

Despite the late surge, the Twins could not overcome the deficit created by the Royals’ sixth-inning explosion. Kansas City out-hit Minnesota 15 to 9. Isbel led the Royals’ attack with a perfect 4-for-4 night, including a solo home run in the seventh inning. Garcia drove in three runs, while Caglianone scored three times.

For the Twins, Bell’s late homer accounted for his three RBIs, and Keaschall drove in two. The Twins’ pitching staff combined for 17 strikeouts but also issued nine walks and hit two batters, with the command issues culminating in the fateful sixth.

The game, which lasted 3 hours and 36 minutes, was witnessed by an announced crowd of 10,870. The teams will conclude their three-game series Thursday afternoon.
